A first weekend in Gothenburg: canals, seafood and a Sunday art visit

Spend Saturday between the central canals and Haga, then give Sunday to Nordic art at Götaplatsen. A seafood lunch and a shared cinnamon bun have their own place in the plan, with the hill climb kept optional.

01

Day one (Saturday): canal frontage and a seafood lunch

Begin near Brunnsparken and walk along the central canal towards Feskekörka, noticing how the bridges frame the older stone façades. This is a useful way to orient yourself before the narrower streets of Haga. Use public pavements and crossings rather than squeezing between tram tracks for a photograph.

Feskekörka is a seafood destination rather than a church visit, despite its pointed windows. We recommend Lilla Åstols Rökeri upstairs for its Bohuslän coastal cooking and smoked-fish dishes. It publishes Saturday lunch service; check the weekend menu and book a table before fixing the time. A fish-counter purchase is a different plan from a seated restaurant meal.

Pråmenaden, the floating terrace beside the hall, is worth remembering for a warmer visit. At our 9 October 2026 review, the operator’s current banner said it would open again in spring, without a date. Packtricia will check for reopening, but always check before travelling. Use the operating indoor restaurants for this weekend’s lunch.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Day one (Saturday): Haga, with space for fika

Continue towards Järntorget and Haga Nygata. Look at the characteristic brick ground floors and wooden upper storeys before browsing the small shops. We recommend Café Husaren for its oversized Hagabullen cinnamon bun. Sharing one is a sensible way to try it after lunch, rather than arriving at the next stop uncomfortably full.

If the weather and your legs suit it, climb towards Skansen Kronan for the outdoor view across the roofs. The ascent adds steps; stay in Haga if slippery surfaces or mobility make it awkward. The fortification interior is not a guaranteed museum visit, so make the exterior viewpoint the optional finish.

03

Day two (Sunday): Avenyn to Götaplatsen

Walk up Avenyn to the Poseidon fountain and cultural buildings at Götaplatsen. Use the square as a short architectural stop, then choose the Museum of Art as the day’s main indoor visit. Follow a few Nordic works or one gallery closely instead of trying to fit every collection and a second major attraction into the morning.

The museum remains open at our 9 October 2026 review. Its current redevelopment plan anticipates closure in 2028 and reopening in 2032; those are preliminary years. Packtricia will recheck the programme, and readers should always check before travelling. If the museum is unavailable on your dates, the square and Avenyn still make a useful public walk.

04

Day two (Sunday): a meal on Avenyn

Walk back down Avenyn to Joe Farelli’s at number 12 for Italian-American cooking, including wood-fired pizza, or its advertised Sunday brunch. Confirm the current brunch sitting and reserve before timing the museum around it. Mr P beside the museum is another option on a different day: at our 9 October review it published Tuesday–Saturday service, so we do not rely on it for Sunday lunch. Packtricia will recheck; always check the venue before travelling.

For an outdoor extension, return gradually along the city streets towards the canals. The Botanical Garden is a separate trip south, not a short detour from this square. Its old greenhouses were unavailable during redevelopment at our review; the garden expects public opening of the new facilities in 2030. Packtricia will recheck, but always consult the garden before travelling. Available outdoor paths are an alternative when the weather suits.

05

A shorter or wetter weekend

In persistent rain, reduce Saturday’s canal walk and give the seafood stop and Haga café more time. On Sunday, keep the museum and meal together. A waterproof shell, shoes with grip and a removable layer make these street-to-interior changes easier. With one day, choose Haga and the canals or Götaplatsen and art, rather than rushing both halves of the weekend.
