Gothenburg by the water: canals, seafood and the harbour

Give Gothenburg’s water a whole outing rather than using it only as scenery between museums. Start along the central canals, make a seafood stop at Feskekörka and choose whether to continue to the open harbour.

01

Begin with a sheltered city stretch

Use the canal near Brunnsparken and the central streets as your starting area, then head towards Fisktorget. This gives you smaller bridges and urban façades before the broader harbour views. Take the route as a walk, with time to stop rather than treating every waterside landmark as a timed appointment.

02

Give Feskekörka a proper meal slot

Feskekörka has reopened after renovation. Its pointed windows explain the “fish church” nickname, while the current hall includes fish counters and restaurants. It is worth mentioning even if an individual counter is closed on your day: check the hall’s own programme, then use an available restaurant or change the meal plan.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

03

Choose the seafood stop deliberately

The city’s current guide lists Lilla Åstols Rökeri, Haldis Kök, Ekmans and Victor von G among the hall’s operators. Compare the actual menus before choosing; a sit-down restaurant and a counter purchase involve different time and costs. Do not assume tastings or a meal are included in a city sightseeing ticket.

04

Extend to the working harbour

If the weather is comfortable, continue towards Lilla Bommen and the waterfront by the opera house. The moored sailing ship and modern harbour architecture give a different view from the enclosed canal streets. Use the current map to connect the stops and allow walking time; the harbour is not immediately outside every central café.

05

Keep the island day separate

The archipelago is worthwhile, but it deserves a separate ferry plan and weather check. For this outing, finish at the harbour or shorten the walk after lunch. A hooded jacket helps on the open water’s edge, and a public walk remains a useful alternative if a seasonal canal cruise is not operating.
