Götaplatsen and Nordic art: a focused Gothenburg museum visit

Begin with Poseidon, then spend the afternoon with Nordic painting at Gothenburg Museum of Art. A few chosen rooms make a more rewarding visit than trying to see the entire collection.

01

Look back down Avenyn

At Götaplatsen, stand near Carl Milles’s Poseidon and look along Avenyn. The art museum, concert hall and theatre give the square its cultural setting. This is the outdoor start; a concert or performance requires its own booking.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Choose the Nordic rooms

Enter Gothenburg Museum of Art and ask about the current display in the Fürstenberg Gallery. Look for Richard Bergh’s Nordic Summer Evening, which the museum highlights for its quiet light and two figures looking across the landscape. Then compare it with the darker moods in the Nordic fin-de-siècle rooms, rather than rushing between famous names.

03

Use a guide if you want the story

The museum offers a bookable English tour connecting Nordic painting and the Fürstenberg collection. Arrange it ahead: the published booking information requires at least eight working days. The group guiding fee does not include admission. Independent visitors can instead use the current collection information and choose two or three rooms.

04

Pause by the museum

Consider Mr P for a drink or meal beside the art museum. The venue is useful for keeping the outing around the square; its restaurant offers internationally influenced dishes rather than a specifically Swedish tasting menu. Check the current menu and reserve a meal separately from museum entry.

05

Know the future works plan

The museum was operating when reviewed on 8 October 2026. Its current redevelopment plan envisages closure in 2028 and reopening in 2032, with dates still preliminary. Packtricia will recheck access; always check the museum before travelling. If an interior visit is unavailable, keep the square and Avenyn walk as the outdoor alternative.

Gothenburg’s central canal, bridge and waterside façades

Gothenburg by the water: canals, seafood and the harbour

Give Gothenburg’s water a whole outing rather than using it only as scenery between museums. Start along the central canals, make a seafood stop at Feskekörka and choose whether to continue to the open harbour.

Stora Saluhallen market hall at Kungstorget in Gothenburg

Gothenburg’s Saluhallen: a Swedish lunch and a short city walk

Make Kungstorget your lunch stop for a walk through central Gothenburg. Saluhallen offers Swedish cooking at the counter, with shopping streets and the canal close enough for an unhurried afternoon.

Café Husaren on Haga Nygata in Gothenburg

Haga and Skansen Kronan: a café street with a hilltop finish

Walk Haga Nygata for its mixed brick-and-wood houses, then decide whether to climb to Skansen Kronan. A shared cinnamon bun is a useful pause in the middle of the route, not a reward squeezed in after every sight.

Historic Gothenburg buildings beside a canal bridge

A first weekend in Gothenburg: canals, seafood and a Sunday art visit

Spend Saturday between the central canals and Haga, then give Sunday to Nordic art at Götaplatsen. A seafood lunch and a shared cinnamon bun have their own place in the plan, with the hill climb kept optional.

Fotografiska’s brick waterfront building in Stockholm

Fotografiska: photography, waterfront views and lunch choices

Use Fotografiska for a photography visit with a waterfront finish. Check the current exhibitions first, then decide whether lunch or an evening drink fits your museum time.

A Gamla Stan lane leading towards Riddarholmen Church

Gamla Stan on foot: Stortorget, quiet lanes and Riddarholmen

Use Gamla Stan’s squares as anchors instead of wandering without a plan. This walk pairs Stortorget and a proper fika stop with quieter lanes and the waterfront around Riddarholmen, leaving paid museum visits optional.
