Tangier medina walk: Grand Socco, the Kasbah and the Legation

Link Grand Socco and Petit Socco with an uphill Kasbah visit, then descend to the American Legation and the old harbour edge. Choose one museum if you prefer a shorter day.

01

Use the two Soccos as your anchors

Begin at Grand Socco, with Cinéma Rif marking the edge of the old city. Walk into the medina towards Petit Socco; save the two squares on your phone so you have recognisable anchors when side lanes become confusing. Keep this first stretch slow enough to notice shopfronts and daily deliveries.

The public lanes are the attraction here. Ask before photographing people or entering workshops, and do not interpret an open door as permission to enter a home. For a shorter route, return to Grand Socco after Petit Socco and leave the uphill Kasbah section for another outing.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Climb towards the Kasbah and choose a museum

Continue to Place de la Kasbah, where the palace museum gives the climb a clear destination. Look at the gateways and changing views over the city as you ascend. There are steps and sloping sections: this is not a reliably step-free route.

The FNM lists the Museum of Mediterranean Cultures and the Kasbah contemporary art space separately. Choose the collection that interests you and confirm current admission at the specific museum. Do not build the walk around access to every interior. A tea pause at Café Baba fits this part of the medina; its simple drinks menu and possible smoke make it a short stop rather than a family meal plan.

03

Descend to the American Legation

Use the Tangier American Legation Museum on Rue d’Amérique as your next anchor. Its collections connect the city with diplomatic history, art and literary life. Check the current visitor page and allow time for the museum itself; booking a guided tour requires advance contact.

If you have already spent your museum time in the Kasbah, keep this as an alternative for a rainy morning. Continue towards the old harbour-facing streets for an exterior view of the Hotel Continental above the walls, without assuming its terraces are open to casual visitors.

04

End at Cinéma Rif or shorten for rain

Return to Grand Socco for a café pause at Cinéma Rif, which fits the route better than crossing the city just for a drink. A screening is a separate optional activity: check the current programme, language and subtitle information.

Wear grippy shoes and carry a light layer, water and your saved accommodation location. On a wet day, prioritise the Legation and a short Socco loop; slippery steps and poor visibility are reasons to leave the longer climb for another time.

05

Make the uphill section optional

Start at Grand Socco when you want the climb to happen early, before you become tired. If stairs are a concern, ask a licensed taxi about an accessible drop-off near the Kasbah and assess the immediate surface before continuing; this does not make the medina route step-free.

Carry only what you need for the walk. A secure bag leaves your hands free on steps, and saved museum locations help you rejoin the route after browsing a side lane. In hot weather, keep water available before beginning the climb.
