A first weekend in Rabat: Oudayas, Hassan and Chellah

Spend one day between the medina and the river, then give Rabat’s monuments and archaeological park a second day. This plan leaves space for a proper meal and a tea stop, with an art museum alternative when the weather changes.

01

Saturday morning: medina lanes, then Oudayas

Start at Bab El Had, then work through the medina towards Rue des Consuls. This gives the walk a direction without turning every shop into a required stop. Look at the carpets and craft displays that interest you, ask before photographing inside, and leave bargaining for something you actually want.

Continue to Bab Oudaya. Look at the carved monumental entrance, then use the open visitor entrance beside it. Inside, follow the blue-and-white residential lanes towards the river viewpoint. Keep doors and steps clear: this is a neighbourhood as well as a visitor attraction.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

For a shorter transport-based overview, Compare the private Rabat tuk-tuk circuit. This is a private tuk-tuk outing with a driver, not a substitute for a guided historical visit. Confirm the stops and time allowed at each one; Chellah visits and admission are optional extras. Check your meeting point and language before booking, and keep a full archaeological visit separate.

02

Saturday afternoon: tea and an unhurried meal

Try Café Maure for mint tea and Moroccan pastries above the estuary. It fits the kasbah outing because you can pause near the garden rather than crossing town for a break. Treat it as a tea stop; check the day's offer before counting on a full lunch.

For a sit-down Moroccan meal, consider Dar Naji Bab El Had, which serves dishes such as tagines and pastilla. Choose the Bab El Had branch deliberately: the restaurant has several Rabat addresses. It makes sense when returning towards the medina’s western side, rather than as a detour from Chellah. Check the current menu, dietary requirements and opening before setting out.

03

Sunday morning: Hassan Tower and the mausoleum

See Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V together. Walk among the remaining columns to understand the unfinished mosque’s scale, then look back towards the tower. The mausoleum gives the same site a different architectural focus, with its white exterior and green roof. Follow the guards’ instructions about access, dress and photography; do not count on climbing the tower.

Leave a meal break before travelling onward. Avoid treating every royal or religious building on a tour map as an interior you can enter: access arrangements can change, and this plan does not depend on a palace visit.

For a broader guided alternative, Compare the guided Rabat city tour. Premium Transfers & Tours combines a chauffeur/guide with vehicle transport and selected central-Rabat hotel pickup. It replaces several independent stops. Chellah admission is extra; confirm the actual monument access and language, and bring the passport requested for the palace-area stop. Do not assume access to restricted interiors.

04

Sunday afternoon: Chellah, with an indoor alternative

Make Chellah a separate outing, using a licensed taxi if the cross-city walk does not suit your energy or the weather. Inside, follow the interpretation panels between ancient Sala and the later necropolis. Take closed shoes, water and time to pause; it is more rewarding than a quick photograph at the gate.

On 21 October 2026, the site’s Heritage Interpretation Centre ticket was listed as unavailable. The open archaeological park remains the main visit. Packtricia will check for changes, but check the venue before travelling. The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is a separate-ticket alternative for paintings and other modern Moroccan art; the tourism office lists Tuesday as its regular closing day. Swap days if needed rather than assuming it is always a rain fallback.

05

Keep the plan comfortable

Book Chellah’s audio equipment ahead if you want it, and distinguish ordinary entry from guided or audio options. Save your accommodation directions, keep your phone charged for tickets, and pack a wind layer for the river even when the afternoon is warm. If you have only one day, choose the medina and Oudayas plus Hassan, leaving Chellah for another visit.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.

An Oudayas walk: Bab Oudaya, blue lanes and river views

The Oudayas kasbah works best as a short walk with a few clear anchors: the monumental gate, residential lanes, river platform and Andalusian garden. Leave time for tea rather than trying to turn the neighbourhood into a checklist.

Chellah in Rabat: ancient ruins, ramparts and the necropolis

Chellah deserves its own outing. The archaeological park brings ancient Sala and the later Marinid necropolis into one enclosed landscape, with ramparts and interpretation panels that help connect the visible remains.

Hassan Tower and Mohammed V Mausoleum: reading the plaza

Give the Hassan site a focused visit rather than taking one photograph from the gate. The unfinished minaret, rows of columns and green-roofed mausoleum make sense when seen together, with time to move around the open plaza.

A first weekend in Fès: two manageable medina days

Give Fès two different days: one around Bab Boujloud and Bou Inania, another deeper in the craft quarters. A museum, a proper lunch and optional stops make this a usable weekend rather than a race through the medina.
