A first weekend in Tangier: medina, museums and the sea

Spend Saturday between Grand Socco, the Kasbah and the old harbour, then choose a relaxed waterfront Sunday or a separate Cap Spartel outing. Keep museums and café breaks in the plan.

01

Saturday morning: Grand Socco to the Kasbah

Start at Grand Socco, where the modern city meets the medina. Notice the tiled minaret of Sidi Bou Abib Mosque from the square, then enter the lanes towards Petit Socco. This is an exterior mosque stop; do not assume visitor entry. Continue uphill towards Place de la Kasbah, allowing time to browse shops without blocking doorways.

Make the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures your optional interior visit. Its palace setting and archaeological collections add context to the streets outside. Check the FNM museum listing for the day’s access; the nearby contemporary art space is a different museum, so do not assume one ticket covers both.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Saturday afternoon: a café pause and the Legation

Pause at Café Baba for tea or coffee and the photographs on its walls. This is a simple, potentially smoky café rather than a lunch restaurant; arrange a proper meal separately. Descend towards the American Legation on Rue d’Amérique for its art and diplomatic history. Check its visitor page before setting out and contact the museum in advance if you want a guided tour.

Finish on the harbour-facing edge of the medina, looking towards the Hotel Continental above the walls. View the hotel from public streets; an interior or terrace visit depends on the business’s arrangements. If you still want an evening out, Cinéma Rif at Grand Socco has a current programme: check the film language and subtitles before buying.

03

Sunday: the corniche, or a separate cape outing

For an easy day, walk a manageable stretch of the bay promenade from the marina towards the city beach. You can turn around whenever you want; reaching Malabata is optional. Leave time for a meal and a rest rather than treating the whole bay as a compulsory walk.

Alternatively, give Cap Spartel its own outing with return transport agreed before departure. The lighthouse’s maritime museum and garden make a coherent visit; the tower climb is optional and subject to its admission arrangements. Do not add both the long corniche walk and the cape to a departure day.

For an organised alternative to arranging separate transfers, Compare the Cap Spartel, caves and beach outing. This broader Tangier outing includes vehicle transport and a camel ride; it is not a lighthouse-only visit. Cap Spartel and Hercules Caves entry tickets are extra. Confirm whether the tower or museum is covered by your chosen admission, and check language, pickup and any activity restrictions before booking.

04

Weather and shorter alternatives

In persistent rain, shorten the lanes and choose the American Legation or a film at Cinéma Rif. In strong coastal wind, move the outdoor part to another day. Café Hafa’s sea-facing terraces are another optional tea stop in Marshan, rather than a guaranteed sheltered alternative.

Wear shoes with grip for the medina, carry water and a wind layer, and keep rain protection handy outside the dry summer. Check whether your return journey leaves from Tangier Ville, the city ferry port or Tanger Med before deciding how much sightseeing to fit in.

05

Choose your base and leave room for arrival

If you arrive by rail, check the connection from Tangier Ville to your accommodation before starting the medina day. Luggage is awkward on steep lanes, so leave bags at your accommodation where possible and explore with a small day bag.

With only one full day, keep Grand Socco, one museum and a short harbour view. Save Cap Spartel for a return visit rather than replacing every museum and café pause with time in a vehicle.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
