Uppsala Cathedral’s twin Gothic spires in autumn mist

A first weekend in Uppsala: cathedral stories, castle views and ancient mounds

Keep Saturday in Uppsala’s historic centre, with the cathedral and castle hill as anchors. Give Sunday to Gamla Uppsala’s archaeology rather than treating the royal mounds as a rushed extra after a full museum day.

01

Day one (Saturday): cathedral and a café pause

Begin at Uppsala Cathedral and leave time for its memorials and chapels, with services and visitor access deciding where you can go. The Treasury in the tower is a separate museum choice: check its admission and access before assuming it belongs to a general church visit.

We recommend Katedralkaféet for a nearby pause. The cathedral’s own information places it in the eighteenth-century building beside the main entrance, with Swedish pastries and light meals. Choose from the current counter rather than counting on one particular cake, and check service before planning lunch here.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

For a booked alternative, compare the Uppsala city walk with a local guide. Confirm language and the Uppsala C meeting point. Seasonal garden and greenhouse access and any paid admissions need separate confirmation; this is not a Gamla Uppsala transfer.

02

Day one (Saturday): river crossing and castle hill

Use the river paths for a short change of scene, then climb towards Uppsala Castle. Look back across the cathedral skyline from public grounds, taking care on the slope in wet or icy conditions. The hill is the outdoor anchor; it does not require entering every castle museum.

Choose the Art Museum if its current exhibitions appeal to you, and check the opening before the climb. Museum collections, Vasaborgen visits and castle grounds are different visitor experiences. For a shorter afternoon, keep the view and a single indoor collection instead of booking all of them.

03

A garden worth including, with the season clear

The Botanical Garden is a worthwhile extension below the castle when its routes are available. In winter, some gates close from the first snow until 1 May; check the university’s current entrance information. Café Victoria’s May–September season makes it an unreliable October lunch plan, so keep the cathedral café or an operating city café as your food stop.

The separate Linnaeus Garden’s ordinary 2026 visiting season ended on 13 September. It was unavailable for ordinary walk-in visits at our 9 October review, although the university lists pre-booked museum groups separately. Packtricia will check future opening information, but always check before travelling. Use the Botanical Garden’s available grounds or an indoor museum instead of requiring a Linnaeus Garden visit.

04

Day two (Sunday): archaeology at Gamla Uppsala

Use the current UL planner for the journey to Gamla Uppsala and the museum stop, allowing time for the return rather than assuming a city-centre walk. Begin with the museum when open: its archaeological finds and reconstructions give useful context for the landscape outside.

Walk the permitted paths around the royal mounds and old church area, looking at the relationship between the raised earthworks and surrounding settlement. Respect signs and fenced areas; do not climb burial mounds simply for a better photograph. In poor weather, let the museum carry more of the visit and shorten the exposed outdoor loop.

05

Day two (Sunday): lunch that fits the outing

We recommend Odinsborg beside the royal mounds for Swedish home-style cooking in a wooden building inspired by Norse architecture. The venue lists meat, fish and vegetarian weekend lunch choices; the menu changes, with different summer and Christmas offerings. Check your Sunday’s menu and reserve if needed before travelling.

If the restaurant or museum is unavailable, shorten the mounds outing and return to the historic centre for food instead of waiting for a speculative opening. For a single-day trip, choose cathedral and castle hill or Gamla Uppsala’s archaeology. Warm layers and weatherproof shoes matter on both the hill and the open mound paths.

The Royal Mounds and walking paths at Gamla Uppsala

Gamla Uppsala: royal mounds, archaeology and an Odinsborg lunch

Give Gamla Uppsala a separate outing from the city-centre cathedral. The royal mounds, nearby museum and a Swedish lunch fit together without racing between distant sights.

The square outside Uppsala Cathedral in autumn

Uppsala Cathedral: tombs, treasury choices and a café pause

Use Uppsala Cathedral as the centre of a focused historic outing. Its royal and scholarly memorials reward a slower visit, while the separate treasury and nearby café let you decide how much of the morning to spend indoors.

The baroque garden and Linneanum in Uppsala’s Botanical Garden

Uppsala’s Botanical Garden: baroque paths and a tropical escape

Give Uppsala’s Botanical Garden its own outing, from the formal beds to tropical plants indoors. The garden below the castle and the separate Linnaeus Garden have different access rules.

A pink pedestrian bridge over Uppsala’s Fyris River

Uppsala’s Fyris River and castle hill: one walk, one museum choice

Pair the Fyris River with Uppsala’s castle hill for a walk that changes level and view. Choose one castle museum, then leave space for lunch rather than assuming all the collections can be seen on a single ticket.

Historic Gothenburg buildings beside a canal bridge

A first weekend in Gothenburg: canals, seafood and a Sunday art visit

Spend Saturday between the central canals and Haga, then give Sunday to Nordic art at Götaplatsen. A seafood lunch and a shared cinnamon bun have their own place in the plan, with the hill climb kept optional.

Lund University Library’s ivy-covered brick facade in autumn mist

A first weekend in Lund: cathedral, courtyard houses and campus art

Spend Saturday between the cathedral and Kulturen’s old houses, then give Sunday to the university quarter and Skissernas Museum. This compact plan leaves room for a bakery breakfast and a proper museum visit rather than treating Lund as a quick stop between trains.
