A first look at Bukhara

Bukhara’s old town connects tiled madrasahs, covered trading streets and the pool at Lyabi-Hauz. Start with Poi Kalyan’s minaret and mosque, then follow the trading domes towards the water. Save the Ark citadel and Bolo-Hauz’s wooden colonnade for a separate outing, leaving room for a courtyard meal and a break from the afternoon heat.

What this means for packing

A light jumper over a breathable top suits the trading streets, with a jacket for the pond after sunset. Use closed walking shoes for uneven paving and keep a compact shell ready for a shower. Use this example as a starting point, then download Packtricia for a detailed personal list and quantities tailored to your actual dates, trip length, weather, preferences, luggage and plans.

Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

Packing bands are approximately 2°C either side of the rounded 1991–2020 WMO BUHARA station 38683 mean daily maximum (22.9°C) and minimum (7.4°C). Monthly precipitation totals average 2.7 mm. These are seasonal reference bands, not a forecast or limits on possible conditions. The source file labels its wet-day rows with a different station number, so no wet-day counts are used. JMA BUHARA normals corroborate the broad seasonal pattern; check the current forecast for heatwaves and cold spells.

Transport guide

Getting around Bukhara

Walk between Lyabi-Hauz, the trading domes and Poi Kalyan; plan a separate transfer for the railway station at Kagan or outlying sights. Yandex Maps has a Bukhara public-transport map for bus routes and stops, available on the mobile website and through its app. Check the destination and direction before boarding; the map is a planner, not a ticket, and live vehicle coverage is not guaranteed. ATTO confirms its transport cards are accepted on Bukhara buses. Buy a card through an authorised outlet such as UzPost, top it up, and hold it to the onboard validator until payment succeeds. The official ATTO app provides balance and top-up functions; check local fare-plan terms before activation rather than using a Tashkent tariff. Foreign-card acceptance and phone-only account eligibility have not been established, so arrange a working payment method before your first journey and ask locally about alternatives if your card fails. Railway tickets are separate from city buses. Bukhara has no metro.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.
