A first look at Tangier

Tangier rises from a curving bay to the lanes of the medina and the Kasbah. Spend a morning between Grand Socco and the old harbour, leave time for mint tea or a film at Cinéma Rif, and give Cap Spartel a separate coastal outing.

What this means for packing

Keep a rain shell alongside lighter daytime clothing: autumn rain returns while afternoons can remain warm. Make the American Legation or a film at Cinéma Rif your wet-weather option. Use this general list as a starting point, then download Packtricia for a detailed personal list and quantities based on your actual dates, trip length, luggage, weather, preferences and plans.

Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

Packing bands are approximately 2°C either side of the rounded monthly mean maximum (25°C) and minimum (16°C) in Tangier’s published 1991–2020 climate averages. Historical normals are not a forecast or temperature limits. Rain wording describes the seasonal pattern, not a promise about your dates; check the local forecast.

Transport guide

Getting around Tangier

Walk within the medina, allowing for steep lanes and steps. Issal Tanger operates the urban and suburban buses; older ALSA pages may describe the previous network. Tanja United is an independent local app with bus routes, stops, fares and schedules, including offline information. Use it to plan, then confirm the route and fare at the stop or with staff. It is not a verified mobile ticket: buy the appropriate ticket through the service’s sales arrangements, follow onboard validation instructions and retain it. Use a licensed taxi for awkward connections or an agreed return trip to Cap Spartel. Tangier Ville station and Tanger Med ferry port are different places; check your arrival point before planning onward travel.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.
