Your first Lisbon weekend: hills, neighbourhoods and the river

Start with Rossio, Baixa and Alfama, then choose a Belém outing or more time in central Lisbon. This suggested first weekend names the viewpoints, squares and visits worth considering, with time for meals and alternatives to another uphill walk.

01

Day one morning: Rossio, Baixa and the river

Start at Rossio, walk through Baixa along Rua Augusta, then reach Praça do Comércio and the Tagus waterfront. This gives your first morning a simple line rather than several climbs. The Arco da Rua Augusta viewpoint or Lisbon Story Centre can be an optional admission if you want more than a street walk.

02

Day one afternoon: choose an Alfama route

From the cathedral area, head towards Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol for views over Alfama. Continue through the lanes only as far as your energy allows. Castelo de São Jorge is a separate visit to consider, with its own admission and walking time; do not treat it as a quick stop between viewpoints.

03

Choose one evening around food or music

Stay for dinner in the older neighbourhoods, or book a fado performance if listening to the music is a priority. Check whether the booking is for a performance, a meal or both. Keep the journey home straightforward after the hillside walking rather than adding another district late in the evening.

For a different kind of musical evening, Lisbon Classical Nights at Saint Paul's Church offers an intimate classical guitar concert. It is not a fado performance or a dinner show; choose the music you want and make a separate dinner plan nearby.

04

Day two: a Belém half-day

Travel to Belém for the Jerónimos Monastery area, then walk towards the river and Padrão dos Descobrimentos. Choose a monastery visit if that is your priority and check current admission arrangements. The Tower of Belém can be a waterfront exterior stop; check current access before planning to go inside. These are suggested choices, not a requirement to buy every ticket.

05

Return for a slower afternoon

After Belém, return to central Lisbon for a café, shopping in Baixa or a shorter waterfront walk. If it is wet, Lisbon Story Centre is an indoor option to check. If you would rather stay central throughout the weekend, replace Belém with a castle visit and more time in Alfama instead of racing between them.

06

Keep your final morning close by

Choose breakfast and one nearby square before leaving. A tram ride can fit if it serves your actual route, but do not rely on boarding a particular crowded vehicle before an airport connection. Use current CARRIS service information and allow for the hill between your final stop and your accommodation.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
