Your first Coimbra weekend: university, old town and river

Give Coimbra's university and Joanina Library one visit, then explore the lower town and Mondego at a gentler pace. This suggested weekend names the streets, museums and riverside choices so you can choose a route that fits your interests and energy.

01

Day one: the university and Joanina Library

Make the University of Coimbra your first priority if the Joanina Library is what brought you here. Book the library's assigned date and time, then arrange the other spaces included in your ticket around it. The Palace of Schools, Saint Michael's Chapel and Royal Palace give you different parts of the university story; check access for your selected ticket.

If you want the university's history explained along the way, a University of Coimbra guided tour with Joanina Library entry also lists the Royal Palace and Chapel of Saint Michael. Follow the confirmed library schedule; the route involves stairs and is not suitable for wheelchair users.

02

After the university: Sé Velha and the descent

Walk towards Sé Velha, Coimbra's old cathedral, and take the downhill route through the older streets at your own pace. If you want another museum, consider the Machado de Castro National Museum and its Roman cryptoporticus as a separate visit. Do not squeeze it in just because it sits near the university area.

03

Day two morning: the lower town

Begin around Largo da Portagem, walk along Rua Ferreira Borges through Praça do Comércio, then continue via Rua Visconde da Luz towards Praça 8 de Maio and Santa Cruz Monastery. This gives the lower town a clear route, with shops and a meal stop along the way. Check church visiting arrangements if you want to enter.

04

Day two afternoon: the Mondego

Use Parque Verde do Mondego for an easier riverside afternoon. The Pedro e Inês footbridge can be your crossing if you want views from the opposite bank; turn back sooner if a shorter walk suits you. Choose a café or bench stop instead of making the river another distance target.

05

Choose one opposite-bank attraction

If you want a visit beyond the river walk, consider Santa Clara-a-Velha for the former monastery, or Portugal dos Pequenitos for its miniature buildings. These are different outings, with separate admission arrangements. Choose the one your group wants rather than combining both after a long university day.

06

Leave the final morning for breakfast, not another climb

Keep your last hours in the lower town if that fits your departure. The University tower is currently listed as closed by the university visitor site, so do not build the itinerary around climbing it. Check the live university notices before your trip and confirm your departure station and connection.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
