Your first Funchal weekend: waterfront, old town and Monte

Explore Funchal's waterfront, cathedral, market and old town before choosing a hillside garden visit. This suggested weekend helps you decide between Monte Palace and the Botanical Garden, with a central alternative and room for meals instead of constant transfers.

01

Day one morning: the waterfront and cathedral

Begin along Avenida do Mar, then head into the centre around Sé, Funchal's cathedral. Choose an interior visit if it is open for visitors, or simply use the square as a pause between the waterfront and market. Keep this first route gentle while you get used to the slopes.

02

Day one afternoon: the market and Zona Velha

Visit Mercado dos Lavradores for the stalls and market setting, checking the current opening arrangements first. Continue into Zona Velha along Rua de Santa Maria to look at the painted doors, then walk towards the São Tiago fort waterfront. Stop for a meal instead of making every street a timed attraction.

03

Day two: Monte Palace Madeira garden

Choose Monte Palace Madeira if you want a substantial garden visit in Monte. Plan the journey up and back, allow for slopes within the garden, and carry a layer for different conditions from the waterfront. Check the current admission and transport arrangements. Give this the main part of the day rather than adding it after a long excursion.

At Monte Palace, look for the lakes, bridges, tile panels and sculpture among the planting. Choose a garden circuit that includes the features you enjoy, with time to stop beside the water. This is a place to explore slowly rather than simply a viewpoint above Funchal.

04

Choose the Botanical Garden as an alternative

Madeira Botanical Garden is another garden option, in a different location with different admission and transport arrangements. Choose it instead of Monte Palace if its collections interest you more; do not assume one ticket or one arrival point serves both. A garden visit should leave time to sit and enjoy it.

05

Keep an easier city day available

In poor hillside weather, stay in central Funchal for the cathedral area, the market when open, and a shorter Zona Velha walk. A museum or café can replace the longer outdoor block. Monte's basket sledges are an optional separate experience; check the operator's arrangements and onward journey before deciding.

For an overview with fewer long walks, consider the Funchal hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus and choose stops rather than trying to complete every attraction. The red route and the 48-hour red-and-blue option cover different areas; Monte is on the blue route. Garden admission is separate.

06

An extra day for west Madeira

Choose west Madeira for forest and coastal scenery if you have a separate day to spare, or use it instead of the garden day. Fanal and Porto Moniz make an island excursion with substantial driving, so keep Monte Palace and the Botanical Garden for another visit. Leave your departure morning for a waterfront breakfast and luggage collection.

If you have an extra day, or prefer an island outing to the garden day, we recommend the west Madeira and Fanal forest day trip from Funchal. Allow the full eight-hour outing for Fanal, Porto Moniz and the west-coast scenery. Confirm pickup coverage; meals and optional attraction or pool entry cost extra. Take a layer and walking shoes. Forest walks, swimming and the order of stops depend on conditions; this does not include a Monte garden visit.
