Nidaros Cathedral’s green spires above autumn trees
Trondheim · History walk

Torvet, Stiftsgården and the cathedral exterior

Follow Munkegata from Trondheim’s royal residence to Torvet and the cathedral. This is an exterior history walk with a seasonal palace option, distinct from spending the day inside Nidaros Cathedral and its neighbouring museums.

01

Start with the royal residence

Find Stiftsgården on Munkegata and look at the scale of its wooden façade from the public street. It remains a royal residence, so ordinary sightseeing access is limited. Photograph the exterior without treating an open-looking door or courtyard as permission to enter.

02

Know when an interior tour is possible

At our 9 October 2026 review, the operator’s 2026 visiting season had ended on 16 August and it welcomed visitors back in 2027. Interior admission requires a guided tour during the summer season; no firm 2027 dates were given. Packtricia will recheck, but always confirm before travelling.

03

Continue along Munkegata to Torvet

Make the main square your next anchor and look for the statue of Olav Tryggvason. The straight route links the royal residence, everyday city centre and cathedral precinct. Leave time to sit or browse around the square rather than rushing between two closed or ticketed interiors.

04

End at Nidaros from outside

Continue towards Nidaros Cathedral and spend time on the west façade and the surrounding precinct. For an available indoor alternative to the closed palace, choose cathedral admission separately. Its royal-regalia and Archbishop’s Palace exhibitions are a different complex from Stiftsgården.

05

Finish with a café or a river view

Use Kafé To Tårn for a drink at the end, or continue to Gamle Bybro for the warehouses. In winter, put the outdoor route into daylight and take gloves for stationary photo stops. Skip the bridge extension if frost or rain makes the paving unpleasant.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

Colourful riverside warehouses beside the Nidelva in Trondheim

A first weekend in Trondheim

Use Saturday for the cathedral, bridge and Bakklandet, then give Sunday a music theme at Rockheim or Ringve. The plan leaves room for food and travel, with a simple one-day version and seasonal royal-residence limits.

The red portals of Trondheim’s Old Town Bridge

Bakklandet, the Old Town Bridge and a fish-soup stop

Start with Trondheim’s red bridge portals, then wander the wooden streets of Bakklandet with a useful lunch stop in mind. This is a compact neighbourhood outing, with an optional harbour extension rather than a compulsory climb.

Nidaros Cathedral’s stone walls and spires in Trondheim

Nidaros Cathedral and the royal regalia

Give the cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace area a proper visit rather than squeezing them between photographs. The church interior, royal regalia and tower have different access arrangements; this plan helps you decide what to include.

Trondheim’s warehouses along the Nidelva river

Rockheim, Solsiden and Trondheim’s harbour

Make Norwegian music the main event at Rockheim, with Solsiden and a short waterfront walk around it. Starting beside the Nidelva warehouses keeps the route connected to the old centre while leaving time for the interactive exhibits.

Bergen’s Bryggen waterfront beneath Fløyen

A first weekend in Bergen

Give Bryggen’s trading history one day and keep the second flexible between Fløyen and art. Bergen’s rain and hill cloud are reasons to change the order, while the Fish Market provides a named meal stop.

MUNCH’s distinctive tower beside Oslo’s waterfront

A first weekend in Oslo

Use the first day for Bjørvika and art, then choose Bygdøy or Frogner Park for the second. A separate Akerselva-and-Mathallen pause adds a different part of Oslo without pretending every attraction belongs on one walk.
