MUNCH’s distinctive tower beside Oslo’s waterfront
Oslo · Weekend plan

A first weekend in Oslo

Use the first day for Bjørvika and art, then choose Bygdøy or Frogner Park for the second. A separate Akerselva-and-Mathallen pause adds a different part of Oslo without pretending every attraction belongs on one walk.

01

Saturday morning: Opera House and MUNCH

Begin around the Opera House exterior and permitted roof route, then give MUNCH the main museum slot. Choose its actual current displays. With poor footing or rain, shorten the roof walk and spend longer indoors.

02

Saturday afternoon: one more harbour stretch

If energy and weather allow, use transport or a separate walk towards Aker Brygge. Enjoy the harbour without insisting on a second large art collection. Choose the National Museum instead of MUNCH if its broader collection better matches your interests.

03

Sunday morning: choose the second theme

Choose Fram and a manageable Bygdøy museum day, or the sculpture bridge, fountain and Monolith in Frogner Park. The Viking Ship Museum was closed at our 9 October 2026 review, with the future museum listed for 2027. Packtricia will recheck; always confirm before going.

04

Sunday lunch: Mathallen with a specific reason

Travel to Mathallen for Vulkanfisk if a fish-soup lunch suits you. The venue’s current information lists Sunday restaurant service; check exceptions and dietary needs. Add a short available Akerselva riverside section around Vulkan, rather than promising a long walk after a full museum morning.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

05

Keep the one-day version simple

With one day, choose Bjørvika plus MUNCH, or the National Museum plus Aker Brygge. Leave Bygdøy and Frogner for another visit. In winter, put the outdoor section in daylight and keep transport and meal time clear of your museum booking.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.

Vigeland’s fountain and bronze figures in Frogner Park, Oslo

Oslo: a focused walk through Vigeland’s sculptures

Follow the main sculpture axis in Frogner Park rather than trying to cover every path. The bridge, fountain and Monolith each show a different way Vigeland arranged human figures in the landscape.

Gol Stave Church at Norsk Folkemuseum on Oslo’s Bygdøy peninsula

Oslo: Bygdøy museums and the Viking Ship Museum closure

Bygdøy gives you a choice between polar exploration and Norway’s open-air cultural history. Choose Fram or Norsk Folkemuseum as the main visit; the famous Viking ships are still unavailable during rebuilding.

Aker Brygge and the Astrup Fearnley Museum beside Oslo harbour

Oslo: the National Museum and Aker Brygge

Pair a focused National Museum visit with a harbour walk through Aker Brygge towards Tjuvholmen. This gives the art time to make an impression and leaves a shorter version available if the waterfront is windy.

The sloping white roof of Oslo Opera House beside Bjørvika

Oslo: the Opera House roof and MUNCH waterfront

Bjørvika works best as a short outdoor route with one substantial museum visit. Look at the Opera House from the water, then choose MUNCH for the art rather than treating the neighbourhood as a string of photo stops.

Bergen’s Bryggen waterfront beneath Fløyen

A first weekend in Bergen

Give Bryggen’s trading history one day and keep the second flexible between Fløyen and art. Bergen’s rain and hill cloud are reasons to change the order, while the Fish Market provides a named meal stop.

Colourful café fronts and bunting along Stavanger’s Fargegata

A first weekend in Stavanger

Spend Saturday between the old wooden streets, a museum and colourful Fargegata, then give Sunday to either Lysefjord or the Petroleum Museum. This weekend leaves room for meals and boarding time, with an indoor choice when a boat outing does not suit your plans.
