Colourful café fronts and bunting along Stavanger’s Fargegata
Stavanger · Weekend plan

A first weekend in Stavanger

Spend Saturday between the old wooden streets, a museum and colourful Fargegata, then give Sunday to either Lysefjord or the Petroleum Museum. This weekend leaves room for meals and boarding time, with an indoor choice when a boat outing does not suit your plans.

01

Saturday morning: old streets and IDDIS

Begin on the western side of Vågen and walk into Gamle Stavanger. Make IDDIS at Øvre Strandgate 88 your main morning visit for canning labels, factory equipment and printing history. The cobbled residential streets need considerate walking, and any museum demonstration depends on the programme rather than your arrival time.

02

Saturday lunch and the colourful centre

Cross back through the centre for Godt Brød Sølvberget on Søregata, choosing bread or buns from the current counter. Afterwards walk Øvre Holmegate, known as Fargegata, for the painted façades and café fronts. This keeps a meal between the two neighbourhoods instead of filling the day with consecutive ticketed visits.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

03

Saturday late afternoon: the cathedral option

Add Stavanger Cathedral and Breiavatnet if parish visiting hours still allow it. The cathedral reopened in 2024; check current admission and event closures rather than old restoration notices. If the interior has closed for the day, enjoy the exterior and a short lakeside walk, then leave time for your evening meal.

04

Sunday: choose the fjord day deliberately

For Lysefjord, reserve a suitable Rødne departure from Strandkaien and leave roughly half a day for the return cruise and boarding. You see Preikestolen from below, without a summit hike. Wear a windproof layer for the open deck and budget separately for food. Do not add the full Petroleum Museum visit before a tightly timed departure.

05

Use a city Sunday when it suits you better

Choose the Petroleum Museum for offshore technology and the questions surrounding Norway’s oil industry, followed by a short waterfront walk. Its restaurant was closed at our 9 October 2026 review, with no confirmed reopening date on the checked page. Packtricia will check again; always check before travelling and plan food in the centre instead. Use Kolumbus for your onward journey and leave a buffer for the station or airport connection.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.

Godt Brød’s yellow bakery building on Søregata in Stavanger

Fargegata, Sølvberget and a bakery stop

Use Stavanger’s colourful streets for a relaxed central walk, with a real bakery stop instead of a vague lunch suggestion. Fargegata and Søregata are different streets; keeping their names straight makes the route easier to follow and gives you a simple rain alternative.

Cobbled lane beside the canning museum in Gamle Stavanger

Gamle Stavanger and the stories inside IDDIS

Walk the white wooden streets above Vågen, then step inside IDDIS to see how sardine cans and printed labels shaped Stavanger. This small western-harbour route suits a museum morning, with a bakery stop across the centre afterwards.

Stavanger Cathedral’s east façade and twin towers

Stavanger Cathedral, Breiavatnet and the old centre

Pair Stavanger’s restored cathedral with a short walk beside Breiavatnet and the market-square approach to Vågen. This is a central architecture outing with an optional interior visit, useful when you want a quieter alternative to a long museum or fjord excursion.

Historic MS Rogaland moored at Stavanger’s Vågen harbour

Vågen, the Petroleum Museum and a Lysefjord choice

Follow Stavanger’s harbour towards the Petroleum Museum, then decide whether your main outing stays in the city or continues into Lysefjord. The museum and a fjord cruise are separate visits; this guide helps you choose without mistaking a boat view for a summit hike.

Bergen’s Bryggen waterfront beneath Fløyen

A first weekend in Bergen

Give Bryggen’s trading history one day and keep the second flexible between Fløyen and art. Bergen’s rain and hill cloud are reasons to change the order, while the Fish Market provides a named meal stop.

MUNCH’s distinctive tower beside Oslo’s waterfront

A first weekend in Oslo

Use the first day for Bjørvika and art, then choose Bygdøy or Frogner Park for the second. A separate Akerselva-and-Mathallen pause adds a different part of Oslo without pretending every attraction belongs on one walk.
