Day one: start among Karnak’s columns
Begin at Karnak rather than trying to walk there in the afternoon heat. Follow the main axis into the Great Hypostyle Hall, then look for Hatshepsut’s obelisk and the Sacred Lake. The hall’s changing column heights make a useful way to read the space without rushing through every precinct.
Arrange the journey back before you leave the centre. Karnak is a separate outing from the compact streets around Luxor Temple; save your walking energy for the site itself.
Day one: rest, then Luxor Temple
Take a long break before returning to the centre. We recommend Sofra Restaurant & Café for Egyptian hot and cold mezze in a converted old house, rather than another hotel buffet; reserve if you want its open terrace. It sits in the East Bank streets, so it fits this day without another river crossing.
Visit Luxor Temple later, checking the current admission hours first. Look for the single standing entrance obelisk, Ramesses II’s courtyard and the great colonnade. Finish with a short Corniche stroll only if you still feel comfortable in the temperature.
Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.
Day two: arrange a West Bank morning
Book a car and driver with the actual stops and return agreed in advance. Start with the Valley of the Kings and choose from the tombs open on the day; premium tombs can require extra tickets. The ferry brings you across the Nile, not to the tomb entrances.
Continue to Hatshepsut’s temple for the view of its terraces beneath the cliffs and the reliefs of the expedition to Punt where visitor access permits. Make the Colossi of Memnon an optional roadside pause on your return rather than adding another full temple visit.
Choose a guided circuit instead
A shared full-day circuit can suit readers who prefer arranged transport and explanations to independent ticket and taxi planning. It is a busier alternative, with less flexibility to split the major sites between cool mornings.
For a more concentrated alternative to the independent two-day plan, consider Luxor’s shared East and West Bank tour. Nice Tours combines the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Memnon, Karnak and Luxor Temple in a shared full day. Entrance fees require the relevant option; the standard guide is English-speaking, with other listed languages offered as add-ons. Check the voucher meeting point, East Bank pickup scope, premium-tomb extras and your chosen date before booking. This replaces the sightseeing circuit below rather than being an extra outing.
Keep a shorter version ready
In the hottest months, do Karnak one morning and the Valley of the Kings another, leaving Hatshepsut optional. Luxor Museum is an indoor alternative for learning about objects discovered in the area; check its current visitor session before setting out.
Temple entrance and visitor-centre improvements were announced in 2026. Checked on 21 October 2026, the sources did not establish a blanket temple closure or confirm every project finished. Follow current entrances and barriers; Packtricia will recheck the works, and you should check with the venue before travelling.
Pack for the actual outings
Use secure walking shoes for temple paving, a hat and a water bottle for the exposed courtyards, and a removable layer for winter starts. Avoid carrying a heavy bag through the tombs; save extra belongings for your accommodation.
