A rainy Prague day: National Museum collections and ticket choices

Make the National Museum the main indoor outing, with a choice of prehistory or Czech history, clear ticket exclusions and a café stop after Wenceslas Square.

01

Start at the top of Wenceslas Square

The National Museum’s Historical Building is the domed landmark at the upper end of Wenceslas Square. Make it the main destination on a wet day, using the Muzeum transport connection and PID’s live planner instead of committing to a long exposed walk first. The Museum Complex also includes the contrasting New Building, connected by an underground corridor. You can explore that contrast during a single museum outing, without adding another museum across town.

02

Choose fossils or the history of the Czech lands

Windows into Prehistory offers fossils and life-size prehistoric-animal models; it suits visitors who want to compare objects and reconstructions rather than follow a city-history itinerary. The History exhibition covers the Czech lands from the medieval period to the First World War. Choose one as the first focus, then see how much attention and energy remain for the other. Trying to cover every case in both buildings can turn a useful rainy afternoon into a rushed checklist.

03

Read the ticket exclusions before buying

Reviewed 13 October 2026: the Museum Complex ticket includes current and long-term exhibitions with stated exceptions for Czech Press Photo and the Children’s Museum. The Children’s Museum has separate timed admission, so a family should reserve the intended session rather than expect the general ticket to cover it. Check the current temporary-exhibition list for your dates; a listing seen today is not a promise that it remains throughout your trip. Buy the actual museum ticket and keep it available for entry checks.

04

Allow for capacity and leave bulky bags

Admission can pause when the buildings reach capacity. Online purchase helps with ticketing but does not turn a busy holiday into guaranteed immediate access. The operator requires umbrellas and luggage above its stated size threshold to be left in the cloakroom; take a small bag for valuables you need with you. Visitors using a pushchair or needing step-free entry should read the New Building access instructions and contact the museum about specific needs. Remove your wet outer layer where appropriate so the visit is comfortable after the journey.

05

Finish with a square walk or a planned pastry stop

When the rain eases, look down Wenceslas Square from the museum end before choosing how far to continue. For a separate café finish, Café Louvre on Národní 22 offers warm apple strudel, Sacher cake and other desserts on its checked menu. Prague City Tourism confirms the café’s address and reservation option. It is an extension through New Town, not the museum’s own café; allow for that transfer and skip it if the collections have filled the day. The museum’s listed on-site cafés are the shorter break option.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

06

Avoid turning a city audioguide into a museum promise

If you buy a third-party combination, check what its audio actually covers and how the entry ticket is delivered. An Old Town and New Town audio route is a different product from commentary for each museum display. Museum ticket exclusions still matter, regardless of the seller’s headline. Official admission is a useful comparison for visitors who simply want the collections. Take a charged phone if using digital tickets, comfortable shoes for indoor walking and a rain layer for the journey home.

If you want admission combined with a self-guided city walk, consider National Museum admission with an online city audioguide. The audioguide covers the city rather than a live museum tour. Follow the supplier’s instructions to obtain the actual museum e-ticket: the marketplace voucher alone is not admission. Check whether collection at the Maiselova office is required before going to Wenceslas Square, and bring a charged phone, headphones and internet access. Check separate exhibition exclusions.
