Karlovy Vary’s white Market Colonnade below the Castle Tower
Karlovy Vary · First visit

A first Karlovy Vary weekend: colonnades, cafés and an optional hill

Give the Teplá and colonnades a relaxed first day, then choose a confirmed underground excursion or Diana outing. Leave room for a proper meal and a shorter weather alternative.

01

Day one morning: three different colonnades

Begin at Park Colonnade beside Dvořák Gardens and notice the delicate metal arches before following the Teplá towards the Mill Colonnade. The stone columns create a different architectural rhythm from the park pavilion. Continue along Lázeňská towards the white wooden Market Colonnade on Tržiště. This order gives the morning a clear shape without requiring a stop at every spring outlet. Use the river as an orientation point and leave space for people taking their regular promenade.

To hear the stories behind the springs as you walk, we recommend a guided colonnade walk with mineral-spring tasting. Meet at the confirmed starting point near Hotel Thermal and check the language and arrangements for a drinking cup. This is an outdoor walking and tasting experience, not spa treatment, a funicular ride or an underground Hot Spring excursion.

02

Day one afternoon: the southern river streets and lunch

Continue towards the Hot Spring area, then follow the southern promenade towards Grandhotel Pupp. Café Pupp provides a researched meal or pastry stop: its linked menu lists a chicken-and-bacon club sandwich and eggs Benedict, while its signature Pupp cake contains Becherovka. Check ingredients and current availability if that matters to your group. A café visit is a separate purchase, not part of a colonnade ticket or hotel spa booking. Leave time to sit rather than fitting lunch between tightly timed visits.

03

Day two: choose an excursion deliberately

If the spring infrastructure interests you, ask SPLZaK about an actual Hot Spring underground excursion and its language, session and access conditions. The guided route is distinct from looking at the colonnade above it. Alternatively, make Diana your outdoor choice if the funicular and weather suit the day. Do not schedule both as automatic additions: each needs its own arrangements, and a relaxed return through town can be more useful than rushing between separate attractions.

04

Diana needs a live operation check

The Diana lower funicular station is on Mariánská Street near Pupp. As reviewed on 14 October 2026, the operator’s page still shows a 1–25 September closure exception without a visible year. That does not establish the current closure status or a confirmed reopening. Ask the operator before relying on the ride. The lookout’s published admission is free, but transport and other attractions are separate decisions. Stay with the central river and café outing when the hill journey cannot be confirmed.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

05

A wet-weather and a shorter version

In persistent rain, keep the sheltered colonnade portions and a meal break, adding an underground visit only after confirming the actual excursion. Covered architecture does not make every path between it dry or step-free. For a shorter weekend, spend day one on the Mill and Market colonnades and save the Park section for the second morning. You can enjoy the architecture without signing up for treatments or turning spring tasting into a required activity.

06

Pack for pauses and separate the bookings

Walking shoes with grip and removable layers suit a town where you may stop frequently under shelter and beside the river. A hooded rain jacket helps on the connecting streets, and an extra knit is useful for an exposed hill outing. Packtricia will recheck recorded access conditions; readers should check the operator before travel. Leave enough time for the return connection and any luggage collection. A swimming or spa session needs its own booking and packing requirements rather than being assumed from the city’s spa identity.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
