Palm-lined Riva waterfront in Split

A first weekend in Split: palace streets, markets and a flexible second day

Keep Saturday centred on the palace and food district. On Sunday choose a short Marjan outing or Klis, leaving room for a proper meal and the journey back.

01

Saturday morning: palace streets and one interior

Begin at the Golden Gate and walk to the Peristyle. Use the first part of the morning to understand the street layout, then choose the cathedral for its doors and interior detail or the paid cellar halls for palace structure. Confirm current admission rather than buying every available combination. Keep the tower optional if stairs or heights are uncomfortable.

02

Saturday midday: two markets and a useful pause

Visit Pazar beside the east wall, then cross through the centre to the fish market near Marmontova. Buy fruit if it fits the day; treat raw seafood as a look-and-learn stop without a kitchen. We recommend Uje Oil Bar for a reserved olive-oil tasting or a seated meal. Choose one so lunch does not become a rushed gap between activities. The operator notes entrance steps; discuss access if needed.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

03

Saturday evening: a waterfront finish

Return to the Riva after the busy sightseeing part of the day. Compare the palace frontage with the harbour and leave time to sit. If you booked a tasting at midday, make a separate dinner plan from the current restaurant menu; the tasting is not automatically an evening meal. In rain, move the longer interior visit here and keep the waterfront brief.

04

Sunday: choose your scale

For the shorter day, check the Marjan authority’s map and current notices, then walk through Varoš towards an available lower viewpoint. Keep the return straightforward; no complete forest circuit is required. If the path is closed or weather makes the climb unpleasant, use the public waterfront and another central visit instead. Packtricia will recheck the recorded trail uncertainty, but always check before travelling.

05

Sunday alternative: Klis without overloading the day

If the fortress is your priority, replace the hill walk with Klis and confirm both legs of transport first. Reserve time for its uneven paths and the return to Split. Do not bolt on a distant island excursion. Olive Museum admission at Stella Croatica needs its own availability check: current tour listings omit it on Sundays. At our 9 October 2026 review it was not a reliable Sunday stop; Packtricia will recheck, and readers should confirm with the venue. Finish with a meal back in Split rather than relying on an unspecified tour lunch.

On a winter weekend, Stella Croatica’s published April–October season makes the museum extension unsuitable as a fixed stop. Keep Sunday to Klis and a meal back in the city, or choose another central interior. Packtricia will check seasonal reopening, but confirm directly before making the journey.

Klis Fortress walls overlooking the Split region

Klis from Split: fortress views, ramparts and the transport decision

Klis is a separate excursion above Split, not another stop inside the palace. Choose between an independent fortress visit and a tour with transport before adding olive-museum time.

Split’s Riva waterfront beneath the mountains of the Dalmatian coast

Split’s Marjan: a viewpoint outing with a shorter waterfront alternative

Give Marjan its own part of the day rather than tagging a hill climb onto an already long palace visit. A lower viewpoint can be enough; a full forest circuit needs separate access and weather checks.

Historic buildings and square in central Split

Split’s market morning: Pazar, the fish hall and olive oil

Use two different markets to understand the city’s food, then make one deliberate tasting or lunch stop. This is a shopping and neighbourhood route rather than a promise of a ready-made meal at every stall.

Roman columns and arches at the Peristyle in Split

Split’s palace: the Peristyle, cathedral and choosing your tickets

Start with the palace’s public streets, then choose one interior visit. The palace is a lived-in part of Split, so a walking tour and a ticket to a monument are different purchases.

Aerial view of Dubrovnik’s Old Town within its fortified walls

A first weekend in Dubrovnik: walls, palace and a flexible second day

Give the Old Town one full day, then choose Lokrum or Srđ for the second. This leaves room for meals, museum time and weather without making every expensive ticket compulsory.

The Arch of the Sergii above a Pula pedestrian street

A first weekend in Pula: Roman monuments, tunnels and olive oil

Keep Saturday centred on the Arena and Roman streets, then give Sunday one museum or tasting choice. This plan leaves space for the city’s layers without promising entry to its closed main archaeology museum.
