Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia seen across its forecourt beneath clouds

A first weekend in Sofia: churches, Serdica and a theatre evening

Spend two days in Sofia with a cathedral-area morning, ancient streets, a city museum and time for a Bulgarian meal rather than a rushed mountain detour.

01

Day one morning: cathedral and a quieter historical layer

Begin at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Walk around the permitted forecourt to see the domes before deciding whether an interior visit fits the services taking place. Continue to nearby Saint Sophia Basilica; its brick exterior makes a useful contrast to the cathedral’s domes.

If archaeology interests you, ask about the separate underground museum beneath St Sophia. The necropolis is a worthwhile deeper stop, rather than another church to tick off. Allow time to read the interpretation; do not assume a city tour or church visit covers the museum ticket. Choose this as the morning’s main interior instead of squeezing in several more museums.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

An optional introduction with a guide

This researched walk can replace part of the independent morning. Book it for interpretation of the city’s history, leaving separately ticketed museums for your own time.

Compare the Sofia history and heritage small-group walk This English-language city walk starts at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and lists visits to the cathedral and St Sophia. It does not establish admission to St Sophia’s underground archaeological museum or a theatre performance. Confirm your selected option, meeting time and mobility suitability.

03

Day one afternoon: Serdica and the courtyard rotunda

Head towards the Largo and the Ancient Serdica Complex. Look at the surviving street layout in relation to the buildings overhead. Follow the marked route rather than walking across exposed masonry, then find Saint George Rotunda. The red-brick church’s enclosed setting is part of the surprise.

Leave some time to stop and compare the different layers instead of collecting photographs at every crossing. The public archaeological passages, indoor exhibitions and functioning worship spaces have different access arrangements. If a service or restricted area changes the plan, keep the permitted exterior route and move the indoor visit to another time.

04

Make dinner an actual stop

Moma on Solunska Street is a researched central dinner choice after the walk, recommended by the local Free Sofia Tour team and corroborated by the restaurant. Its menu gives you specific Bulgarian dishes to ask about: Shopska salad and patatnik, a potato-based regional dish, are starting points rather than a fixed set menu.

Confirm today’s dishes, ingredients and euro prices. An old online menu may still display lev; Bulgaria now uses euros. Book if you want a predictable seated finish, and leave enough time to enjoy the meal rather than attaching another distant attraction afterwards.

05

Day two: history museum and a City Garden pause

Begin at the former Central Mineral Baths, now home to Sofia’s history museum. Choose the museum for city context and check which exhibitions are open. The decorated building is worth seeing from outside even if the visit does not fit, but its historic name does not make it a public swimming or spa facility.

Continue towards City Garden for a gentler afternoon. Chitalnyata, the reading-room visitor centre, is a useful small stop for current cultural information. Keep this day compact if yesterday involved a long guided walk; you can give a museum more attention without adding a cross-country excursion.

06

Optional evening: choose the performance, then the ticket

The Ivan Vazov National Theatre publishes a separate English-surtitles programme. Check the actual production, date, stage and language support before buying. An English version of the website does not mean every performance has English text, and a city walking tour is not a performance booking.

In wet or cold conditions, shorten the garden walk and build the afternoon around an open museum and your chosen show. Comfortable shoes and a removable outer layer suit the journeys between them. Keep the next day free of an early mountain departure if you prefer a relaxed theatre evening.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
