Day one morning: give the Old Town a clear route
Start near Dzhumaya Mosque and the Roman Stadium area, then climb into the Old Town along the signed public streets. The mosque remains a working worship space: an exterior look is a complete stop if sightseeing would interrupt prayer. Follow the cobbles towards the Ancient Theatre rather than trying to enter every house on the way.
At the theatre, decide whether you want the paid archaeological visit or simply to continue your walk. A show ticket, a sightseeing entry and a guided city walk are different bookings. Keep comfortable shoes on for the steps and leave time to pause in shade in hot weather.
Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.
An optional guided introduction
This can replace part of the independent first morning if you want historical context. Keep separately chosen museum visits for later in the day.
Compare the Plovdiv Old Town and Roman-heritage guided walk This starts in Plovdiv and covers the centre and Old Town. Confirm your selected language, meeting point and any separate theatre, house-museum or stadium admission. It is not a performance ticket, and uneven cobbles and steps affect suitability.
Day one afternoon: choose a house, then a hill
Choose Hindliyan House for painted interiors or Balabanov House for its reconstructed Revival-house setting and exhibitions. Check the day’s opening and lunch break before committing to both. One attentive visit is preferable to arriving at a second locked door.
Continue towards Nebet Tepe if the weather and your energy suit the climb. It reopened after restoration in March 2025; use the current marked visitor paths rather than an old photograph as a route map. Keep the descent familiar and within comfortable daylight if the paving is damp.
Make a specific Kapana dinner plan
Pavaj at 7 Zlatarska Street is a researched dinner option after returning downhill. Local guide material confirms its address, and a resident interview recommends its ribs. Treat that as a dish to ask about rather than a guaranteed daily special. Check the current menu, ingredients and reservation arrangements.
If it is full or the menu does not suit, Aylyakria at 3 Kozhuharska Street is a nearby researched alternative. The local writer recommends seasonal cooking and soups; the venue confirms its Kapana address. Choose one meal, not both, and allow enough time to sit rather than turning dinner into another hurried stop.
Day two morning: make the basilica the main indoor visit
Plan a separate visit to the Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis. Its visitor centre interprets mosaic floors and the site’s layers; follow the numbered reader rails or the official audio material rather than hurrying straight to the most photographed detail.
Check single versus combined admission before paying. A combined mosaic-site ticket is a particular product covering named sites, not a general pass to all Old Town houses. The Small Basilica and the Eirene building are separate places; adding all of them is optional, and depends on today’s access and how much archaeology you want.
If food is your second-day priority
A food-led city outing is a coherent alternative to adding more museums. It uses a different meeting point and should be planned around the basilica rather than assumed to depart from it.
Compare the Plovdiv Bulgarian food and culture walk This is a separate city food outing with tastings, not museum admission. The listing includes foods such as banitsa and mekitsa; tell the provider about allergies and dietary needs. Confirm your actual meeting point, menu and selected date.
Day two afternoon: keep the city day manageable
Return to Kapana for a short look at craft streets such as Zlatarska and Zhelezarska. The municipal guide explains their workshop origins; choose shops that are actually open and ask before photographing makers at work. There is no need to add a mountain excursion to complete a city weekend.
In heavy rain or heat, shorten the outdoor route and keep one confirmed indoor visit and meal. In winter, check the shorter visitor calendar and daylight before a hilltop finish. The monthly packing guide gives a general starting list; the app tailors it to your actual dates, luggage and plans.
