A first look at Istanbul

Start with Sultanahmet’s monuments, leaving space for prayer breaks, security checks and lunch. Give Galata and Karaköy their own walk rather than rushing between ticketed sights. A Şehir Hatları ferry to Üsküdar opens up the Asian waterfront; Salacak offers a shore view of Maiden’s Tower without buying island admission. For a sweet stop near Karaköy’s piers, try pistachio or walnut baklava at Karaköy Güllüoğlu on Kemankeş Caddesi. Hagia Sophia restoration can restrict views; check current visitor arrangements before paying.

Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

Rounded average daily minima and maxima from Turkish State Meteorological Service Istanbul statistics, measurement period 1950–2025, representing Kadıköy, Florya and Sarıyer stations. The daytime band spans mean low to mean high; the nighttime band brackets the rounded mean low by one degree and is not a measured night-extreme range. Monthly rainy-day averages range from about 3.5 in July to 16.3 in January. Climate averages are not a forecast; city districts and exposed ferry decks can feel different.

Transport guide

Getting around Istanbul

Use Metro Istanbul’s mobile-friendly journey planner, maps and timetables for its metro, tram and funicular network. T1 serves Sultanahmet and Karaköy; check live service notices before leaving. Use Şehir Hatları’s separate timetable for the precise pier, direction and last return ferry: city crossings and sightseeing Bosphorus tours have different schedules and fares. The planner does not sell tickets. Municipal guidance directs visitors to BELBİM vending machines and authorized sellers for Istanbulkart and limited-pass tickets, and also lists contactless bank-card payment. Buy and load a physical card before boarding, then tap at the gate or reader; check acceptance and fare for each service. Istanbulkart Mobil is linked from the municipality’s app directory, but registration and payment functions have eligibility requirements: use a physical card and machines if setup is unsuitable. No app registration is needed to read the operator websites. Do not assume city credit pays for a private sightseeing cruise or intercity train.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.
