A first look at Ankara

Start around Ulus and the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, then climb toward Hisar Kapısı and the old houses inside the citadel. Save room for a sit-down lunch at Safranhan Brasserie by the museum cluster, or begin lower down with simit and tea at Simitçi Dünyası Ulus. Visit Anıtkabir on a separate morning so security checks and the museum do not squeeze the rest of the day. The neighbouring Ethnography and Painting and Sculpture museums offer two different indoor outings; the art museum closes on Mondays. Use public transport between these clusters rather than treating the whole city as one continuous walk.

Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

Approximate planning bands centred on rounded average daily maxima (day) and minima (night), with two degrees either side. Based on the Turkish State Meteorological Service Ankara 1991–2020 normals table, checked 24 October 2026. These bands are editorial context, not measured temperature extremes or a forecast; cold snaps and heatwaves can fall outside them. Check the forecast for your actual dates.

Transport guide

Getting around Ankara

Install EGO Cep’te from the download links on EGO’s official page for Android, iOS or Huawei. It provides bus routes, stop searches, arrival information and a Nasıl Giderim journey planner; Metro, Ankaray and suburban-rail information is also available. Save the five-digit bus-stop code for the direction you need. Use EGO’s maps and service notices to check a connection before setting off; Ulus is useful for the old-city area, but the citadel still involves an uphill walk. For payment, consult the current Başkent Kart Ulaşım guidance: load a transport card and hold it to the bus reader or station gate until payment is confirmed. The app lists card dealers and supports balance/history and top-up functions, subject to account setup; a route result itself is not a ticket. Use a staffed card point if registration or payment setup is unsuitable. Do not assume a city transport balance or student pass covers TCDD intercity trains, Başkentray subscriptions, airport services or outlying routes at the same fare. Check their individual conditions.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.
