A first look at Vientiane

Pair Wat Sisaket and Ho Phra Keo for a morning of Buddha images and temple architecture, with a seated lunch before heading towards Patuxai. That Luang is a separate ride rather than another stop on a compact riverside walk. On a second day, choose Buddha Park outside the centre or the COPE Visitor Centre’s rehabilitation and UXO exhibits. At our 25 October 2026 review, COPE’s own visitor page gave two different closing times. Confirm directly before a late visit; plan it earlier in the day rather than relying on the later time. Doi Ka Noi’s own website confirms that the restaurant closed in 2025; it remained closed at our 25 October 2026 review, with no announced reopening. Packtricia will check for reopening, but check the venue before travelling. Choose Kualao for a currently offered Lao meal instead.

Climate methodology

Lao Department of Meteorology and Hydrology data supplied through WMO World Weather Information Service for Vientiane. The historical reference span is 1951–2000; separate temperature and rainfall subperiod fields are blank. October: mean daily maximum 30.8°C, minimum 22.9°C, rainfall 78.0 mm and 9 reported rain days. The rain-day threshold is not specified. Packing temperature bands round the historical mean maxima/minima and add ±2°C; these are not forecasts, extremes or guaranteed daily ranges. JMA ClimatView and the World Bank’s recent environmental assessment corroborate the broad dry/wet seasonal pattern; no claim is made that this older WMO series is a current normal.

Transport guide

Getting around Vientiane

Walk the compact temple and riverside core in short stages, using safe crossings and shaded breaks. Patuxai, That Luang, Buddha Park and the railway station need separate journey planning. LOCA’s official site links its iOS and Android downloads; the operator confirms Vientiane taxi coverage. Register and verify your phone, set a pickup pin on an accessible road, enter the destination and inspect the fare and chosen payment method before booking. Cash, card and QR options are listed; check current fees and retain Lao kip as a backup. A booked car ride does not buy a temple admission, train ticket or bus fare. LaoBus is an independent Android route and live-arrival planner, not a confirmed official ticketing app. Its listing provides Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise contact details. Check the current route, last return and stop with the operator before using it for Buddha Park; do not assume a live map activates a ticket or that all routes run to the park. No current official bus-app ticket purchase/activation flow was verified. Arrange a return vehicle for outlying visits when the bus connection is uncertain, and allow a separate transfer to an intercity railway departure.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.

Entry guide

Entry information for Laos

Check visa eligibility and passport requirements for your nationality with Lao immigration before travelling. The official eVisa service accepts eligible ordinary passports and only designated checkpoints; carry a printed approval letter and the passport used to apply. Check the current digital arrival and departure card requirements for your actual checkpoint: an arrival card does not replace a visa. Government travel-advice pages currently differ over whether paper forms remain accepted, so confirm with immigration and your carrier rather than assuming a paper fallback.
