A first look at Mumbai

Start in Colaba at the Gateway of India, then walk north through Kala Ghoda and Fort for the CSMVS museum, Horniman Circle and CSMT. Leave another outing for Elephanta, reached by ferry from Apollo Bandar and closed on Mondays, or cross the city to Bandra for its fort, promenades and café lanes. Mumbai’s suburban trains cover long north–south distances; use Yatri or m-Indicator to plan modes and check service changes. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain, so confirm ferries, park access and your exact route before travelling.

Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

Indicative monthly packing bands round the India Meteorological Department’s 1981–2010 Mumbai mean daily minimum and maximum temperatures with a small planning margin; they are not forecasts or record extremes. The short rain description follows the same table’s monthly rainfall and mean rainy days. Mumbai’s island and suburban readings differ; check your dates and local alerts.

Transport guide

Getting around Mumbai

Mumbai’s suburban trains are useful for longer north–south trips, with the Western, Central and Harbour corridors meeting at major interchanges such as Dadar and CSMT. Yatri identifies itself as the official Mumbai local rail app; it gives local-train routes, live status and alerts, and also plans metro, monorail, bus and ferry connections. Its Mumbai Metro QR ticket purchase is a separate feature: buy and activate the eligible metro ticket in the app, and confirm which line and operator it covers. Do not assume the app sells suburban-train tickets. m-Indicator is an independent alternative for route planning across local trains, BEST buses, metro and ferries; use railway or operator ticket counters or the applicable authorized ticketing method to buy and validate fares. Check current megablock notices before relying on a specific train, and use a metered taxi or booked car for places far from stations.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.
