Day one morning: the waterfront at Market Street
Start at the Ferry Building, where the clock tower marks the meeting of Market Street and the bay. Browse the indoor marketplace before deciding whether to continue north towards Pier 7 or south to Pier 14. Both offer a waterfront perspective without buying a boat ticket; choose one direction and check local pier access rather than turning the morning into an end-to-end march.
Make lunch part of the waterfront outing
We recommend considering Hog Island Oyster Company for an oyster or chowder stop at the north end of the marketplace. The operator confirms the location and menu, while independent food coverage includes it among the market’s worthwhile choices. Check current service and the menu before settling in; allow a meal break instead of joining a ferry queue hungry.
Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.
Day one afternoon: choose a Golden Gate view
Travel to the Presidio for Tunnel Tops, the Visitor Center and an optional descent towards Crissy Field. If the bridge itself is your priority, use the Welcome Center area and decide whether a short east-sidewalk walk suits the wind and current access. These are distinct stops: a viewpoint is useful even without committing to the full crossing.
Day two: gardens or an island reservation
Choose Golden Gate Park for the Music Concourse, a booked Japanese Tea Garden visit and a separate museum or Conservatory decision. Alternatively, use a genuine Alcatraz island reservation when the island is accessible. At our 13 October 2026 review, NPS announced dock closure from 26 October, with repairs expected by 18 November; weather can change that timeline. During closure, keep the park or mainland waterfront plan.
Keep the return route simple
Use the current SFMTA planner and compare Muni fare products with your actual journeys. Cable cars have their own fare choices; a standard ride should not be assumed to include them. Carry walking shoes, a sweater and wind protection even in summer. Packtricia will recheck the dock notice, but check the park and concessioner before travelling.
