Kraków’s Royal Road: St Florian’s Gate, the market and Grodzka

Follow actual Royal Road anchors through the Old Town, with a shorter version and an optional Wawel finish. Allow time for the square and a researched meal rather than treating the route as a race.

01

Start at the gate rather than an unnamed street

Begin at St Florian’s Gate and orient yourself on Floriańska towards the Main Market Square. The gate’s surviving defensive setting provides a clear first anchor before the street opens into the much larger square. Look back once there is space to do so, without blocking people crossing the gateway. The evening photograph shows the gate and street, but this route works in daylight too; it is not a promise of a quiet night scene or a particular lighting display.

For a guided or bookable alternative, consider this Kraków Old Town walking tour as a guided route alternative. Confirm current stops and language before booking; Wawel Castle, Cathedral, St Mary’s interiors and tower tickets are separate unless explicitly included in your selected option.

02

Give Floriańska and the market time

Continue along Floriańska to St Mary’s Basilica and the Cloth Hall rather than turning the walk into a list of shopfronts. The church’s unequal towers and the long trading hall make the change in scale easy to notice. Keep any church or museum entry optional and verify its actual visitor arrangements. A public street route does not include a tower session. Spend time looking across the square from more than one side before deciding whether to continue south.

03

Build a meal detour into the route deliberately

If lunch is part of the outing, turn towards the western Old Town edge for Smakołyki at Straszewskiego 28. That is a deliberate detour near Planty, not a restaurant directly on Floriańska. The current menu’s Kraków-style maczanka combines slow-roasted pork, sourdough bread, cucumber and onion jam; bigos is another option to check. Independent In Your Pocket coverage supports the restaurant for Polish cooking. Allow time for the detour and meal before returning to the central route.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

04

Continue by Grodzka only if you want the longer walk

From the Main Market Square area, continue south along Grodzka towards Wawel. Church façades and the change towards the hill give this portion a different character from the northern shopping street. Keep religious entry subject to services and local signs. You do not need to enter every building to follow the historic route. For a shorter outing, stop after the square and meal, leaving the Wawel section for a separate day when you have a specific visit in mind.

05

Wawel is a visitor choice rather than an automatic finale

If you continue to Wawel, choose an available exterior viewpoint or a separately confirmed Castle or Cathedral admission. Their tickets differ, and the Royal Gardens are outside their published summer season as reviewed on 14 October 2026. Do not make a closed garden the required reward at the end of the walk. Packtricia will recheck the season while readers should check the operator before travelling. A booked interior needs its own entrance and timing, not just an arrival somewhere on the hill.

06

Adapt the walk to weather and comfortable footing

In persistent rain, shorten the street route and favour an actual confirmed indoor visit rather than rushing from shelter to shelter. Planty paths and Old Town cobbles can be slippery, while the Wawel finish adds a climb. Wear tested shoes, carry a rain shell and keep an adjustable layer for slower stops. Leave enough time for the return journey and meal, and treat the northern gate-to-square portion as a complete useful outing when the full route does not fit.
