A first weekend in Venice: St Mark’s, Rialto and Dorsoduro

Keep Saturday for the palace and central streets, then use Sunday for Rialto and Dorsoduro. One main booking per day leaves room for meals, bridges and the transport you actually need.

01

Saturday morning: St Mark’s with one reservation

Start with the square and exterior architecture, then use your Doge’s Palace reservation. Choose a self-guided ticket or a guided visit deliberately; Secret Itineraries and the basilica are separate decisions. Allow time for security and the visitor route before booking a second interior. Carry a small bag and use footwear suited to the day’s bridge steps.

For the self-guided palace visit, consider the Doge’s Palace reserved-entry ticket. This is admission, not a guided tour. The listing also includes the Correr, National Archaeological Museum and Marciana Library rooms; St Mark’s Basilica and Secret Itineraries are separate. Check the selected option’s entrance instructions. The ticket is non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled; security checks remain.

02

Saturday afternoon: choose the basilica or a neighbourhood

If mosaics are a priority, book the appropriate basilica option and understand whether it includes the Pala d’Oro, museum or loggia. Otherwise use a slower public-street walk and save the second ticket for another day. Cannaregio and the Ghetto square work as a neighbourhood alternative, with museum and synagogue interiors subject to separate confirmed availability.

03

Sunday morning: Rialto without a market promise

See the bridge and canal, but check the actual trading day before expecting the fish and produce markets. For cicchetti, use All’Arco only after confirming its service that day. The counter stop is a small-bite idea, not a guaranteed full lunch or a fixed menu. Leave time for a proper meal according to appetite.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

04

Sunday afternoon: one Dorsoduro art choice

Cross via Accademia towards a booked Peggy Guggenheim visit, then continue to the Salute exterior. The collection’s published Tuesday and 25 December closures matter if your trip extends beyond Sunday. If you prefer an outdoor afternoon, keep the bridge and waterfront route and omit the museum; no art ticket is needed just to appreciate the canal views.

05

Keep transport and city entry rules separate

At our 9 October 2026 review, the official site confirmed the 2026 access-fee trial had ended: no fee payment or exemption was required from 27 July 2026. Future-year rules are a separate decision. Check the official portal for your travel dates rather than assuming the same policy will continue. A waterbus ticket, museum ticket and any future access-fee requirement are different things. Use ACTV’s current instructions for ticket validity and validation, and check tide information before relying on the usual waterside path. For one day, keep St Mark’s, one interior and a Rialto food stop rather than squeezing in both outer neighbourhoods.

Santa Maria della Salute beside Venice’s Grand Canal

Dorsoduro: Salute, the waterfront and a Guggenheim visit

Cross towards Dorsoduro for a different pace and one focused art visit. Santa Maria della Salute anchors the outdoor route, while the Guggenheim’s booking and Tuesday closure shape the museum choice.

Gondolas and buildings on the Grand Canal near Rialto in Venice

From Rialto to Cannaregio: canals and the Jewish Ghetto

Start near Rialto, then use Cannaregio’s squares and canals to move beyond the central photo stops. Treat a synagogue or museum visit as a separately confirmed booking rather than promising entry throughout the district.

The Rialto Bridge crossing Venice’s Grand Canal

Rialto: the working market, bridge and cicchetti at All’Arco

Visit the market during its trading day, then make a small-plate stop with a named address. This gives Rialto a useful role in the day beyond crossing the bridge for a photograph.

St Mark’s and the Doge’s Palace: choose the right Venice tickets

Choose the palace for Venice’s government and the basilica for mosaics and religious art. Their proximity does not make them one ticket or one interchangeable visit.

Keep the first day around the civic squares and food shops, then choose San Luca or a slower museum day. The closed Asinelli climb should not determine whether the weekend feels complete.
