A first weekend in Agra: marble, red sandstone and old-city food

Pair a morning at the Taj Mahal with Agra Fort, then give the second day to the Yamuna’s north-bank monuments or the distant city of Fatehpur Sikri.

01

Day one, Saturday morning: the Taj Mahal, from gate to garden

The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset; it is closed to general visitors on Fridays. Buy the correct ticket through the official ASI booking route and read its current restrictions before leaving. Leave time for security, and remember the main mausoleum requires a separate ticket add-on.

Follow the long garden axis toward the marble platform, then slow down to look at the calligraphy, pietra dura and the paired mosque and guesthouse. Keep your visit within the complex; the north-bank viewpoint belongs to another outing.

02

Breakfast: make time for Agra’s bedai and jalebi

We recommend [Deviram Sweets at Pratap Pura]( https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Deviram%20Sweets%20Pratap%20Pura%20Agra ) for bedai with spicy potato sabzi and hot jalebi. Food writers document this as an Agra breakfast, and the shop identifies its Pratap Pura location; confirm the branch and current service before travelling. If you prefer to avoid a street-side counter, choose a sit-down breakfast nearby and ask about spice and dairy.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

03

Saturday later: Agra Fort’s river-facing rooms

Enter through Amar Singh Gate and choose a deliberate loop through the courtyards, Diwan-i-Aam and the marble Khas Mahal. From Musamman Burj, look across the Yamuna toward the Taj; the two monuments make more sense together than as isolated photo stops. The fort is open on Fridays, when the Taj is closed.

For a guided option, compare Raj Tour & Travel’s private Taj Mahal and Agra Fort visit. The 3–5-hour private route combines the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort with Agra pickup and drop-off. The monument tickets are included only in the selected ticket option; breakfast is a stop at your own expense. Recent reviews praise guides, while some mention unclear shopping-stop opt-outs; ask whether any optional stop is planned. Check pickup, ticket choice, guide language, date and current availability before booking. The Taj is closed on Fridays.

04

Day two, Sunday: choose one route beyond the two icons

For a compact day, cross to the north bank for Itimad-ud-Daulah’s marble lattice and inlay, continue to Chini ka Rauza’s glazed-tile façade, then leave time for Ram Bagh’s terraced garden. These are separate places with their own gates; arrange an auto or car between them.

If the planned day is an unhurried half-day trip instead, go west to Fatehpur Sikri. Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, the tomb of Salim Chishti and the palace courtyards form a substantial walking visit, roughly 36–40 km from Agra. Do not combine it with the north-bank circuit.

05

Keep a Friday or hot-weather alternative

On Friday, make Agra Fort and the north-bank monuments the main plan and shift the Taj to another day. In May and June, go early, take an indoor lunch break and shorten the exposed garden walks. Check official visitor notices and current tickets before each visit.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
