Piac Street: merchant façades, Hal köz and Kossuth Square

Make the short downtown walk about the details above shopfront level: old bank buildings, copper spires and the square’s monuments. Add a seated Hungarian meal or a church visit without turning every doorway into a compulsory stop.

01

Begin around the old Town Hall

Use Tourinform at Piac utca 20 as a starting point for an up-to-date city map. Follow the main street towards the Great Church, pausing to compare the former merchant houses. This is an architectural walk rather than a promise of access to private interiors: use the façades and street views as the main sights.

02

Look for two distinctive corners

At the Kossuth Street junction, find the pink former First Savings Bank building. At Simonffy Street, look for the paired tenement blocks with copper spires. They make useful anchors because they turn a straight walk into a sequence of specific details. Look up from a safe standing place and keep tram tracks clear when stopping for photographs.

03

Use Hal köz as a pause rather than a detour to rush

The official city guide identifies Hal köz as a courtyard area for a terrace break. Add it before continuing to the square if a café is open and the weather suits sitting outside. For a planned meal, IKON at Piac utca 23 offers seasonal Hungarian cooking with a contemporary approach. Book when needed and inspect the menu rather than assuming every classic dish is always served.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

04

Finish with the details in Kossuth Square

Compare the Great Church’s yellow façade with Hotel Aranybika, then find the Kossuth monument and city coat-of-arms mosaic. The tourism board also identifies a surviving fragment of the old raised wooden walkway near the hotel; look for its display rather than expecting the historic walkway to run along the street today. Fountain operation and event barriers can vary, so the buildings and monuments are the more reliable anchors.

05

Choose your extension according to access

If the church is receiving visitors, add its interior as a separate paid stop. For more time with art, continue to Déri tér and select an open museum; for a shorter outing, finish after the square and sit down for a break. Heavy rain makes a museum a more useful extension than a long search for outdoor details. Check Monday closures before relying on that alternative.

06

Keep the route comfortable

Wear shoes you have already walked in, take an adjustable layer and leave room for the meal or optional interior. Avoid photographing across moving trams or standing in a cycle or pedestrian flow. The photograph shows the church and a city tram; it does not establish the current timetable or guarantee a specific tram model on the day.
