Rhodes’ palace: rooms, courtyard and the separate wall walk

Choose the palace for its courtyard and furnished halls, then treat the elevated walls as a separate visit. A palace ticket does not turn every part of the fortifications into an all-day public walk.

01

Arrive by the Street of the Knights

Climb the Street of the Knights towards the palace gateway. Look for the coats of arms above the stone entrances. The short approach gives the building a setting: pause before entering rather than following a crowded group straight into the courtyard.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Look at the courtyard before the halls

Inside the Palace of the Grand Master, use the arcaded courtyard as your first orientation point, then move into the rooms. Look down at the mosaic floors as well as up at the ceilings. The building includes extensive Italian-period reconstruction; the interiors are not an untouched medieval time capsule.

03

Choose the walls only when they are operating

At our 9 October 2026 review, Hellenic Heritage listed the elevated fortification walk as closed for November–March, with limited weekday access in summer. Packtricia will check seasonal reopening; always check the venue before travelling. In winter, keep the palace and public Knights’ street as your available route instead of requiring the wall walk.

04

Leave room for a garden meal

For a sit-down meal later in the old town, consider Marco Polo Café. The garden setting in a mansion on Agiou Fanouriou gives you a quieter change from the exposed fortifications. Confirm service and reserve with the venue; choose from the current menu rather than expecting a dish from an old travel review.

05

Shorten the plan in rain or heat

Make the palace the main paid visit and omit the wall circuit if the weather turns. Smooth worn paving needs shoes with grip; a small bag is easier in the rooms than beach luggage. Check the palace’s own seasonal timetable and holiday closures before relying on an afternoon entry.

Rhodes harbour and medieval sea walls

A first weekend in Rhodes Town

Keep this weekend in Rhodes Town: one medieval interior, time for the Jewish Quarter, and a harbour walk. Lindos and distant beaches deserve their own transport plan rather than being squeezed into the city route.

Mandraki harbour with St Nicholas Fort and boats in Rhodes

Rhodes: Mandraki harbour and a shorter moat walk

Combine the harbour’s fortifications with an outside view of the medieval walls. This is a city walk, with a clear turn-back point, rather than a reason to add a long boat excursion to the same morning.

Street of the Knights climbing towards the palace in Rhodes

Rhodes: the Knights’ street and an archaeological museum visit

A short walk between two medieval buildings can reveal two different histories. Use the Knights’ street for the urban setting, then the former hospital museum for the island’s much older objects.

Rhodes’ Jewish Quarter: memorial, synagogue and museum

Give the Jewish Quarter time for its community’s story. The memorial square is a useful starting point, but the museum adds the context that a quick photograph cannot provide.

Chania’s harbour buildings at dusk

A first weekend in Chania: harbour, old-town food and one museum

Give Saturday to the harbour and old town, then choose a museum for Sunday. Keep the closed market and ongoing paving repairs visible in the plan without letting either become a required stop.

Venetian bastions and the cityscape of Heraklion

A first weekend in Heraklion

Give Minoan history one day and Heraklion’s own streets another. Knossos, a city museum and the harbour make a workable weekend when you leave time for transport, meals and a weather alternative.
