Tallinn’s Gothic Town Hall and slender tower above the cobbled Town Hall Square
Tallinn · First visit

A first Tallinn weekend: the square, Toompea and a Kadriorg choice

Spend one day between the Old Town square and Toompea viewpoints, then choose Kadriorg or a fortification visit for day two. Give meals and current admission calendars their own place in the plan.

01

Day one morning: begin in Town Hall Square

Start at Raekoja plats, Town Hall Square, and look at the Gothic Town Hall before choosing an interior. Its long façade and narrow tower give the Lower Town a clear orientation point. Walk a side of the square and notice how the surrounding houses frame it. A public-square visit is different from Town Hall room admission, so leave the latter optional. Keep enough time to look at the architecture rather than building the whole morning around an assumed tower climb.

For a guided or bookable alternative, consider this Tallinn medieval walking tour for a guided introduction from Town Hall Square towards Toompea’s viewpoints. Confirm the selected language and meeting point. The walk involves hills and cobbles; optional church visits can cost extra, and this is not a Town Hall room, seasonal tower, Kadriorg or bastion admission ticket.

02

Day one afternoon: take the hill slowly

Continue towards Toompea and make Kohtuotsa and Patkuli the viewpoint anchors. Kohtuotsa brings the Lower Town roofs into view; Patkuli gives another angle towards the walls and northern districts. Slopes and cobbles deserve a comfortable pace, with a shorter version if your group is tiring. Church façades can add interest along the way, while religious interiors remain subject to worship. Do not turn a viewpoint walk into an obligation to enter every building or climb every paid tower.

03

Give the Old Town meal a real address

Plan Rataskaevu 16 as a meal stop back in the Lower Town. Its current menu includes a cauliflower steak with paprika-and-tomato cream, beetroot hummus and mushrooms, giving a concrete plant-based option to check. Independent In Your Pocket coverage confirms the restaurant’s Old Town location, while the operator supplies ingredients and reservations. Book directly when the meal matters to your plan and check dietary needs; neither a recommendation nor a menu photograph guarantees immediate seating or unchanged seasonal dishes.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

04

Day two: choose Kadriorg for park and art

For a different second day, travel to Kadriorg and give the palace exterior and park their own outing. The palace houses Kadriorg Art Museum; choose a museum visit deliberately rather than assuming the grounds include its collection. NOP at Köleri 1 offers a researched café stop near the district, with the operator’s poached eggs and smoked salmon on rye bread among the menu choices. Leave time for the journey and meal rather than presenting Kadriorg as a short side street from Town Hall Square.

05

Keep the seasonal restrictions visible

Reviewed on 14 October 2026, the Town Hall tower is outside its published June–August visitor season and cannot be visited by appointment. Town Hall rooms instead use September–May appointments. Kadriorg Art Museum’s current calendar closes Mondays. Packtricia will recheck these recorded conditions; visitors should still confirm the operators before travelling. Town Hall Square, the public viewpoints and available Kadriorg park paths are the alternatives when an interior is closed. A room appointment does not reopen the tower.

06

Use a fortification visit as the other second-day choice

If walls and underground history interest you more, consider the Kiek in de Kök museum and bastion passages instead of Kadriorg. Confirm the actual route, ticket and visitor arrangements before setting out. The tower exterior gives the outing a clear anchor even when a chosen indoor route is unavailable. Shoes with grip, a removable knit and a hooded shell fit Old Town paving and slower outdoor pauses. Keep one main museum choice, allowing time for meals and the return journey.
