Notre-Dame Basilica’s twin towers and Gothic facade facing Place d’Armes in Montréal
Montréal · First visit

A first Montréal weekend: Old Town, river views and a hilltop choice

Give the historic streets one day and choose either Mount Royal or Jean-Talon Market for the second. This leaves space for lunch, an indoor visit and changes in the weather.

01

Day one morning: Place d’Armes and a chosen interior

Start at Place d’Armes and look at Notre-Dame Basilica’s twin towers before deciding on a daytime sightseeing visit. Book that separately from the evening AURA experience. If you enter, leave the morning flexible enough to look carefully rather than arriving with a second attraction booked immediately afterwards.

For a guided or bookable alternative, consider this Old Montréal walking tour for a guided introduction to the historic streets. Choose the language and route that suit your plans; this is not a Notre-Dame Basilica admission or AURA ticket.

02

Day one lunch: pause on Saint-Jacques

Consider Crew Collective & Café at 360 Saint-Jacques for coffee and a light meal beneath the former Royal Bank headquarters’ vaulted interior. Check the café’s current menu; its dining room and coworking areas have separate arrangements. Allow a proper seated break before continuing east.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

03

Day one afternoon: Saint-Paul and the river

Follow Rue Saint-Paul towards Place Jacques-Cartier and Marché Bonsecours, noticing the contrast between reused stone buildings and the open waterfront. Drop down to the Old Port promenade for a short view across the river. Choose either this relaxed walk or a booked cruise; leave enough room for boarding if you choose the boat.

04

Day two in good weather: Mount Royal

Make Kondiaronk Belvedere your main aim, using the park map to choose a path appropriate to your mobility and the surface conditions. Add Beaver Lake only if you have energy for the extra walking. A snack or lunch pause at an open Café des Amis location makes more sense than rushing down to fit several distant attractions.

05

Day two alternative: market or archaeology

If hill paths are icy or visibility is poor, choose Jean-Talon Market in Little Italy for produce stalls and a meal from an open market business. It needs a separate transit journey from Old Montréal. For a history-focused indoor alternative closer to the first day’s route, book Pointe-à-Callière and leave time to explore its archaeology rather than adding it as a hurried final stop.

06

Keep closure and weather choices realistic

Reviewed 13 October 2026: Tourisme Montréal reports Smith House closed for renovation, and the park café operator also carries a closure notice; no reopening date is confirmed. Packtricia will check for reopening, but check the venue before travelling. Use the available park paths and another confirmed open café instead. Warm layers and grip matter in winter; carry water and shorten exposed walking in summer heat.

Check before you go

Opening arrangements and visitor rules can change. Check the official information before your trip.
