Elevador Lacerda linking Salvador’s upper city with the port below
Salvador · Upper and lower city route

Lacerda bay views and Mercado Modelo

This route connects a bay overlook with the craft market in Comércio. The lift solves a change in height; the best view comes before you enter its cabin.

01

Start above the port

Use Praça Municipal for the broad view over Comércio and the bay. Identify Mercado Modelo below and the circular Forte São Marcelo offshore. The fort’s appearance in the view does not mean it is included in a market outing or accessible without separate transport arrangements.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

02

Use the elevator for the connection

Elevador Lacerda connects the upper and lower city. Its cabins are not panoramic: enjoy the overlook first, then use the lift as transport. It reopened after refurbishment in February 2025; check current operation and fare on the day. If service is interrupted, arrange transport between the districts rather than assuming an unfamiliar steep lane is the best alternative.

03

Browse Mercado Modelo with a purpose

At Mercado Modelo, compare textiles, craftwork and small gifts before buying. Ask about materials, the maker and the final price; that makes the browsing more useful than buying the first souvenir you see. Keep enough room in your bag if you are packing for a flight.

04

Separate the market from the gallery

The lower-level Galeria Mercado is a separate exhibition experience. Check its own ticket and visiting details; market browsing does not automatically include it. Choose the gallery if you want an indoor stop after shopping, or return to the upper-city overlook for a shorter outing.

05

Keep the two districts manageable

Allow a pause for water before returning uphill, especially when arriving from a longer Pelourinho walk. For a longer historic day, do the upper-city streets first and the market afterwards. Keep Barra for another outing rather than adding a cross-city transfer just to tick off the lighthouse.

For an optional booked version, compare the Salvador city-highlights tour. Select the Cidade Baixa option if the lower city is your goal; full-day and historic options cover different areas. Confirm pickup, meal inclusions and access needs. Historic wording must be reconciled with São Francisco’s restoration closure.

Colourful Pelourinho façades with São Francisco’s towers at the end of the street

A first weekend in Salvador

Spend one day with the historic centre and a second with Barra’s maritime history and shore. This plan leaves room for lunch and makes Itapuã an alternative rather than a hurried extra.

Blue twin towers of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos overlooking Largo do Pelourinho

Pelourinho, Carnival stories and a Bahian lunch

Take a compact loop through Pelourinho rather than racing from one church door to another. Pair its squares with Carnival exhibits and a lunch that helps you understand Bahian food.

Black-and-white Farol da Barra above the walls of Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra

Barra lighthouse, the nautical museum and the shore

Use Barra for an unhurried mix of maritime history and sea views. The lighthouse grounds and Porto da Barra beach suit different parts of the day; swimming is optional.

Red-and-white Farol de Itapuã beside its sandy beach and rocky shore

Itapuã lighthouse and the Vinicius memorial

Give Itapuã its own outing. Its red-and-white lighthouse and the former home of Vinicius de Moraes make a compact coastal plan, with a proper meal instead of a rushed cross-city checklist.

Florianópolis waterfront and the modern bridges connecting island and mainland

A first weekend in Florianópolis

Spend one day in the historic centre and another around Barra da Lagoa. Two well-chosen districts leave room for meals, museums and island traffic, without pretending you can see every beach in a weekend.

Historic buildings around Marco Zero seen across the Recife waterfront

A first weekend in Recife

Use the first day for Recife Antigo and the second for a deliberate art outing in Várzea. The harbour sculpture park is an optional crossing, not a substitute for either inland Brennand collection.
