Lagoinha do Leste: choose the hike before chasing the view

Lagoinha do Leste pairs a remote beach and lagoon with Atlantic Forest hills. Decide between the beach route and the extra climb to Morro da Coroa before setting out; the summit photograph is not a promise of an easy beach walk.

01

Choose a beach outing or a viewpoint outing

The beach and lagoon are substantial destinations on their own. Choose the beach route if you want time to observe the forest, rest on the sand and look at the lagoon behind the dunes. Add Morro da Coroa only if the extra steep terrain suits your ability and conditions. A day that stops at the beach is not an incomplete version of the trip: it simply leaves more time below the hills.

02

Use Pântano do Sul for the more compact return

The access near Rua Manoel Pedro Oliveira gives the shorter approach from Pântano do Sul, but shorter does not mean flat. It involves a climb through forest and a descent towards the beach. For a first visit, we recommend arranging a local guide and an out-and-back plan here, confirming whether the agreed route includes Morro da Coroa or goes directly to the beach. Save the actual meeting point and return journey before leaving your accommodation.

Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.

For an optional booked version, compare the Lagoinha do Leste natural park hike. Check the Pântano do Sul route, Morro da Coroa section, fitness restrictions and private/shared option. The possible fishermen’s boat is extra and weather-dependent; confirm food, water and the walking return rather than relying on a boat.

03

Treat Matadeiro as a different commitment

The Matadeiro approach starts from the Armação side and gives a longer coastal and forest route. Going in that way and returning to Pântano do Sul creates a point-to-point day, so arrange transport from the finish rather than expecting to emerge beside your parked car. Trail distances and times vary across published descriptions; use the current route briefing and allow a generous daylight margin instead of planning around the fastest estimate.

04

Make Morro da Coroa optional

The distinctive view in the photograph comes from the higher rocky ground, looking over the curved beach, lagoon and forested hills. Its exposed setting requires more care than the sand below. Tell a guide if heights or steep descents are uncomfortable, and be willing to keep the beach route. Stay well back from edges and do not copy the pose in the photo. Wet or unstable ground is a reason to change the plan, not to force the summit.

For an optional booked version, compare the Private Lagoinha do Leste history and photo hike. This is a more demanding private comparison with a technical Morro da Coroa descent. Confirm fitness, child suitability, transport to the start and the actual walking return. Food and transfers are not automatically included.

05

Carry the picnic rather than relying on beach service

Bring enough water and a packed meal for the agreed outing, plus a snack for the return climb. The tourism bureau describes limited food and drink provision at the beach; a seasonal stall is not a dependable substitute for your supplies. Carry a small bag for rubbish and take it back out. Rest after the outward walk before deciding whether any optional extra still fits your energy and daylight.

06

Keep the return independent of a boat

Local boats may offer a return when conditions allow, but availability and price need checking and the sea can prevent operation. Do not use a possible boat ride as the only way to finish the day. Arrange a walking return within your ability before starting, and verify separately whether any booked guided tour includes boat transport. Beach swimming is optional and depends on current local advice and conditions; the land outing remains worthwhile without it.

07

Pack for the terrain and change the day when needed

Use worn-in hiking footwear with grip, breathable clothing, sun protection and an accessible rain and wind layer. Bring a dry top if you intend to swim and keep it separate from trail clothes. Check weather, current park notices and the guide’s briefing before departure. In heavy rain or unsuitable conditions, replace the hike with the flatter Pântano do Sul shore or an indoor city visit rather than assuming the trail must remain part of the itinerary.

Florianópolis waterfront and the modern bridges connecting island and mainland

A first weekend in Florianópolis

Spend one day in the historic centre and another around Barra da Lagoa. Two well-chosen districts leave room for meals, museums and island traffic, without pretending you can see every beach in a weekend.

Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Sambaqui: a bay-side afternoon

Choose the island’s northwest shore for a slower afternoon of old village streets, a Portuguese seafood meal and bay views. Santo Antônio and Sambaqui fit together; a distant beach or fort cruise does not need to be added.

Steel towers and trusses of Florianópolis’s Hercílio Luz bridge

The market, historic squares and Hercílio Luz bridge

Start with Florianópolis’s historic squares and market, then finish near the old suspension bridge. This is a city walk with a proper food stop; it does not need an island beach transfer to feel complete.

Barra da Lagoa channel mouth and its stone jetty beside the beach

Barra da Lagoa’s channel and turtle-conservation centre

Give Barra da Lagoa a day with room for the journey. Pair the working channel and beach with Projeto Tamar, then choose a short shore walk instead of turning a relaxed visit into a chain of rocky trails.

Historic buildings around Marco Zero seen across the Recife waterfront

A first weekend in Recife

Use the first day for Recife Antigo and the second for a deliberate art outing in Várzea. The harbour sculpture park is an optional crossing, not a substitute for either inland Brennand collection.

A first weekend in Rio de Janeiro

Give Rio’s two major viewpoints separate days, keeping the Botanical Garden or centre as alternatives when cloud changes the plan. This makes room for transport, a proper meal and return queues instead of packing every famous sight into one tour.
