Make the approach part of the visit
Use Gjirokastër Castle as the destination rather than following any staircase that appears to climb towards a wall. The old town sits on a steep slope and the entrance is not reached from every lane. Start with a small bag, leave unnecessary luggage at your accommodation and ask locally for a suitable approach if steps are a concern.
On a hot day, choose a cooler period for climbing and carry water. On a wet day, look at the paving before committing to the descent as well as the ascent. A short distance on a map says little about grip or gradient. The bazaar below makes a useful shorter alternative when the full approach does not suit your group.
Mobile data for your trip. Check what your current plan includes for roaming. If you need another option for maps, messages and booking details, compare NXTL eSIM coverage and rates. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and check coverage for every stop. Download important maps and confirmations for offline use too.
Use the tower and valley as your outdoor anchors
Once inside, orient yourself with the clock tower and the open views towards the Drinos valley. Look back at the roofscape as well as out towards the mountains: the castle’s relationship with the hillside town is part of what makes the setting distinctive. Follow the current permitted visitor route between open areas and galleries.
The tower is a landmark to look at, not a promise of access to an internal staircase or viewing platform. Keep away from restricted edges and leave room for other visitors at narrow viewpoints. An exterior route can be a complete visit without a claim that every room or terrace is open.
Choose the military-history visit deliberately
The national tourism agency identifies a Weapons Museum in the fortress, with material connected to twentieth-century conflict and the former prison. Choose it if those subjects interest you and allow time to read the interpretation. A display of artillery or an aircraft in the wider site does not by itself explain the history of every object.
At the entrance, ask which exhibitions your ticket includes and whether prison access is available. Opening arrangements and ticket combinations can change; this guide does not treat an old online price as a current tariff. If a room is unavailable, use the remaining permitted castle route rather than looking for an unofficial way inside.
The Cold War Tunnel is a different outing
The Cold War Tunnel lies beneath the town, with its entrance near the municipal buildings. The local association describes former emergency-government spaces, including air filtration and power equipment. This gives it a different focus from the castle’s military-history displays.
Check its own tour arrangements and seasonal opening before making it your next stop. It is an underground experience, so ask about stairs, enclosed spaces and any access needs. Do not assume castle admission covers it or that a tunnel visit is the best option for anyone uncomfortable underground. The bazaar is an available outdoor alternative when the tunnel is unsuitable.
Return for a proper lunch
After the descent, Kujtimi on Rruga Zejtarëve is a researched meal option close to the bazaar. The local editorial guide identifies qifqi among its traditional dishes. Ask about the current preparation and choose the rest of the meal around your appetite rather than booking a castle climb immediately after a rushed lunch.
The purpose of this stop is a seated break between different visits. Confirm service and seating on arrival; no particular terrace table is guaranteed. Leave time before another museum reservation, especially if your group walked the approach slowly.
If you want a guide to connect the sites
This organised walk adds the bazaar and Zekate House to the castle. Compare the full route with the shorter castle-focused visit above and decide which suits your day.
Compare the Gjirokastër bazaar, castle and Zekate House guided walk This combines the bazaar, a castle climb and Zekate House. Entrance tickets are excluded according to the booking notes; confirm the selected option and any extra museum admission. It involves sustained uphill walking. Check the meeting point and route before booking.
