A first look at La Fortuna

Use the central park and church to get your bearings, then plan one substantial outdoor outing at a time. For volcanic landscapes, choose the national park’s Las Coladas area; for a gentler lake-focused visit, ask about Los Miradores in the separate Península sector. La Fortuna Waterfall needs a long staircase descent and climb back up, so give it its own unhurried morning. Return to Soda Víquez near the central park for a casado, a practical lunch between excursions. Mistico’s hanging bridges are another separately ticketed forest outing, while a reserved thermal-pool session makes a slower alternative. Neither a clear volcano summit nor wildlife sightings are guaranteed. Keep a town café break available when heavy rain changes the plan, and avoid treating every attraction as a walk from your hotel.

Weather guide

Weather in La Fortuna

Warm, humid conditions and showers are possible throughout the year. February to April usually brings a relative decrease in rain rather than a guaranteed dry season. May through December and sometimes January need especially flexible outdoor plans; cloud can hide Arenal in any month.

What this means for packing

October forest outings need a spare dry outfit and a rain layer you can reach quickly. Choose quick-drying clothes for the humid air and plan an easy central-park lunch break after the waterfall staircase. Carry water despite the cloud and showers. This example is a starting point. Choosing a season

The best-season badge suggests months for general sightseeing, using the typical daytime temperatures and rainfall in our monthly guides. Beach holidays, festivals, winter sports and northern lights trips may suit different dates.

Climate methodology

Broad packing bands are about 2°C either side of the rounded October La Fortuna/Arenal average high (30°C) and low (21°C) in CostaRica.com’s Northern Weather Region table, attributed there to the National Weather Services of Costa Rica. The table was updated in 2023 but does not state its averaging period; these are indicative seasonal ranges, not verified current station normals or a forecast. Costa Rica Tourism’s Northern Plains guidance confirms year-round rain with a relative decrease in February–April. Elevation and storm conditions differ between town, lake and forest; check your actual forecast.

Transport guide

Getting around La Fortuna

Walk the compact town centre, but arrange transport for the waterfall, national park and lake: they are separate outings beyond the central streets. Easy Hop’s mobile website offers booked local shuttles and a pickup map, rather than a public-bus planner or a confirmed native app. Select the La Fortuna zone, check your hotel or nearest pickup point and agree the outward and return journeys with the operator. Its route page gives differing departure descriptions and says service depends on demand, so do not treat the displayed times as a turn-up-and-go timetable. Check supplements for volcano and hanging-bridge stops and buy the appropriate transfer or membership online; the FAQ lists card or PayPal payment. A transport booking does not include attraction admission. Do not assume the stop labelled Volcán 1968 serves SINAC’s national-park entrance: confirm your exact gate before paying. For the waterfall, ADIFORT also describes taxi access from town; arrange the return rather than relying on a taxi waiting outside. Intercity and airport transfers require their own booking and are not covered by a local zone membership.

Check the operator’s current service notices and ticket instructions before travelling.
